Since it uses data and needs data to work is really bad to call it a premium over basic sms.
Especialy elderly people and those above 50 age who dont rely on internet much would never swap basic texts by SMS for anything else especially no Imessage because thats require costly Iphone from even more greedy company and since price is all that matters people will always pick chear android device or feature phone over a useless expensive costly worm bitten Apple phone wth that prison like gimmick full of bloatware IOS.

Whatsapp i uninstalled long time ago since i have no people using it.
Skype was first app i had and used for tests and calles apart the base sms and calls over a cellular network.
Now i dont have even skype because few people i had there are no longer on earth alive.
But i really thing messenger is much more popular than whatsapp.
And apple is too sick to stick to new tricks just like adopting USB-C for their cell phones.

It might work if you infest it with one of the larger Gapps packages - but that sort of defeat the whole purpose of using LineageOS...

Also remember that Google use their own take on RCS.
Asking the fruit company to apply to their take of RCS and not just the native RCS, is just as silly as asking $roogle to support Imessage.
Google do not even let third party Android text apps (like e.g. Textra) in, on their take of RCS, so that would be a start! So really does not make much sense blaming others for not complying...
Anyway, Ios is not the only more or less obscure OS not supporting even native RCS, neither does Sailfish, Ubuntu Touch nor PostmarketOS - AFAIK

The SMS is okay to recieve important alerts from bank and other institutions but that's it. As an inter-personal texting app, it cannot compete with iMessage which is far better and has a lot of features, is secure, and best of all it transmits all data via internet so greedy carrier can't charge for it

Sms was a simple and effective way to communicate until Google screwed up the user interface on Android devices.
Multiple attempts of android has only made it worse.
Sms on old Nokia phones was so simple. Anyways most have shifted to WhatsApp.

Even now Google is pushing it because they replace Rcs servers with google servers they kill idea of RCS and now its just Whatsapp version of Google.

3rd party chatapps that work on both took both roles over here, the whole green vs blue bubble is mostly a US (and in smaller regard Japan) thing.

Well with the time it took aPple to adopt USB in their phones, I guess SMS will turn 50 before they accept RCS.
Especially as RCS is barely 14 years old, and the fruit-company do not like to be at the front edge (except in marketing when they announce things as if it was their new inventions...)
My 2011 Sony Xperia Pro supported RCS - long before Google's app did. Google was quite slow to wake up on RCS too... so they are living in a glasshouse throwing these stones....
