Let's be real, it's a hardware product. Nothing will ever change after it's released in no matter how exceptional the software updates are. Mark my words: they will become another OnePlus in a year or two.

Nothing Phone 2 would be successful if they used :
Snapdragon 8 plus gen 1, 5000 mAh battery with 67w fast charging and ditch the back led blinkers. $699 would be nice

Better release one well-rounded model with good software support than a dozen half-baked models with no software support. That would be a differentiating feature compared to the mass of Chinese phones. We‘ll see.

i doubt they did put so much into R&D of a single phone they still don't make any profit selling it. on the other hand, we don't know how many units was sold globally up to date..
either way, they have quality control issues with "assembled in india" units. if they are not going to make Phone 2 anytime soon, it's probably better to solve current issues.
