Hardly a shocking development, but it's good to have an official confirmation.

Alex 94, 13 Dec 2022Its just subdivision of the same company. Samsung made disp... moreAgain, you didn’t understand: They are the same name but act as different companies. It‘s not just a differentiation on paper.

Here is a more visible example. There is this new TV panel tech called QD-OLED. It has meaningful advantages over LG‘s W-OLED. Now if Samsung was not a conglomerate, they could for example only use these QD-OLED panels in Samsung branded TVs, as a unique selling point. But because they act as different companies, Samsung Display sells these panels not only to Samsung Electronics, but also to Sony Electronics for example. That way, Samsung Display can benefit from selling more panels to more customers, and more customers is like more bidders on an auction, the price (and revenue) goes up.

I hope this made it clearer. There are different people working for Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics. They are even active in different industries. Only thing they have in common is the name, and the parent company where the money goes to/comes from.

Only apple fanboys belived different! When they will get the design,no punch hole and audio jack from Sony, they will have a phone! Untill then, they are just apple crap products, expensive and ugly!

Micron makes sense and not really surprised to hear Toshiba for storage on past iPhones atleast ( good in pc market if I remember correctly).

LG and Samsung and Sony have subdivisions for consumer electronics, but they also have subdivisions for entirely different things like camera sensors, battery chemistry, semiconductors etc. It's like when you see air conditioning systems from Mitsubishi. It's clear that those are different people working on air conditioning systems than those working on cars. Or

Answer would be "no, they don't", because just like Apple, they are not a conglomerate with subdivisions in dozens of different areas, and that's fine. It's just a different business model.

That means that, for example, if Samsung Electronics wants to make a Smartphone with the best chip, they are NOT limited to the Exynos chips from Samsung Semiconductor (just to "keep the money in the company"), but instead they can order from Qualcomm. That means that the weaker links (in this example, Samsung Semiconductor who makes the Exynos chips) don't restrict the stronger links (in this example, Samsung Electronics who makes the Galaxy smartphones)

Not disclosing where you source your components isn't just an "Apple thing", lots of other brands do it. Why would you want competitors to know, if it may give you a business advantage? The opposite can also be true, sometimes being public about collaborations is good for both brands financially. I feel like some of y'all are overreacting and not thinking about this logically.

Anonymous, 13 Dec 2022Does Apple actually produce any of their own components? No, the ram and Nvme drive will most likely be Samsung made too (we know they use qualcomm modems too). They do theoretically design their chips just the fab is from TSMC (same thing with qualcomm or AMD, they use TSMC but then modify and design core architecture and other hardware features), they aren't like intel/past Huawei/Samsung who have/had their own fabrication.

Then how to explain that Sony cameras are worse than Apple-iPhone, Samsung, Huawei or even Oppo, and once LG? Since the Sony sensor is in so many smartphones from other companies, and yet Sony photos are usually very good but still worse than the above-mentioned companies?

Anonymous, 13 Dec 2022Does Apple actually produce any of their own components?Samsung Electronics doesn't produce their own components either. Samsung Display acts as a different business entity. That's why Samsung Display also sells to Xiaomi and other Smartphone makers. That's also why Samsung Electronics uses SoCs from Qualcomm and Mediatek. It's called a conglomerate. Other popular examples of this business model are LG and Sony.
