You get period updates but in the end after many years you will end with a very zupdated phone with latest and most fresh OS and updates for apps, but with a very outdated and barely working or better to say coughing engine known as hardware which wont keep up with new apps.
Even a facebook for example is not the same like it was before. Phone from 2014 for example can run a 2014 facebook but will not be able to run properly 2022 or 2023 facebook.
In case of pixel 7 or 7 pro they will run any present apps smoothly but after 6-7 years they wont run much apart the most basic things like brownser and camera app.

The other half of your statement is crap to be honest. And it comes with a camera package that easily rivals mid DSLRs. Phone that could beat DSLR never came to the light of the world and in next 10 or 20 years will not come. For example A7 full frame DSLR camera by Sony can be bought as cheap as 550 eur used and new from 700.
No phone ever made could beat this no matter what.

      Man i asked for that.
Pure android experience is a good idea but since phone lacks many flagship grade features its not a flagship and its definitely not a phone for gaming.
For a basic tasks like facebook, viber, twitter, whatsapp, internet brownsing i dont need to spend 900 on a Pixel 7 pro if a 200 eur device does same tricks equally fast.

For a decent camera anyone can buy cannon, nikon, olympus, sony, panasonic etc. Camera for 200-300 bucks does lot better photos than most phones especialy google one.
If i buy for example X40 Motorola which cost around 460 bucks plus a 500 eur camera i get both an outstanding phone and a outstanding camera for a price of one google pixel 7 pro which cant be compared to any of them.

Tensor chip may look outdated and weak because at it's core, it's an outdated exynos. It's the end result that makes all the difference in the world. If you actually owned a pixel, you would know that. Day to day experience is uncompromised thanks to overall pixel software that is backed up by modified AI cores. Please don't comment based on your feelings. No one asked for it.

Raw numbers in android mean nothing. I do believe that is the case ever since phones started to get more megapixels every year. Without proper software, it's meaningless. ROG phone is meant for gaming. Pixel is a daily driver. ROG phone and other Chinese phones are either bought for budget reasons and you flash a custom ROM to it or you just want to play games. ROG phone is not cheap at all in any regard. And it never had a decent camera.

Most chinese flagships have a lot better specs,
Google pixel is nothing but an average midrange phone with a lot of updates.
No fast charging no charger in the box no proper 200 mpix camera with a 1 inch sensor, no 500 HZ like bnubia red magic or ROG phone. And many else which most chinese phones have but pixel lacks.

YUKI93, 26 Dec 2022The Pixel 7 Pro may well be one of the best phones of 2022,... moreFriend to be honest if they add more megapixels to the camera, much faster charging speeds charger into the box, bigger battery, better refresh rate and many else real flaships have i could be a one of best phones of a year.
But with that tiny battery super slow litterary crawling charging and many else which this phone should have but dont have its not perfect its not even close to that.
Just my honest opinion. Nothing more, nothing less and nothing else.

[deleted post]Clearly not enough to be 5/5. Jokes aside, even if I may not agree with every choice in George's list, today's most interesting and cutting edge phones come mostly from Chinese companies. That is not a political statement, endorsement, or anything of the like. Simply a fact we must acknowledge even if you'd wanted it to be different.

Someone, 26 Dec 2022What about OnePlus? Best value for money, and great phones ... moreIn short, the best OnePlus phones that fit your description are not from 2022. That's the real issue with OnePlus, their current models fail to best the previous ones... at least not enough to justify the price difference. Let's not even go down the rabbit hole of software and how Oppo essentially destroyed the primary reason for buying a OnePlus -- that pixel-like near-stock by optimized and smartly improved OxygenOS; that now is a ColorOS with lipstick. Not necessarily bad software, but it's also not what made people buy a OnePlus, and that should be a big issue the higher-ups at Oppo must realize sooner or later.

Marketing wise subjective opinion... Xperia 1&5 k.o.'s all of these.
                        Shame!

Hope you have seen these phones unlike the other reviewer that puts a phone in top 5 that he admits he hasnt even seen yet

"My thirst and curiosity for new smartphones has dwindled over the years."

Same here, George. I don't think smartphones being a thing will last forever. Who knows if by 2052, we'll still be using smartphones like we do today or if this website will still exist? Since 2017, smartphones have gotten much better but also a lot less interesting. Same old, same old. Removing features are now the new features.

The Find N2 looks interesting but no wireless charging is a big pet peeve for me these days as I tend to put them on a wireless pad that looks like a drink coaster every night. Wireless charging has been around since 2009 with the Palm Pre and so many of the Chinese OEMs ignore that feature.

I didn't think 2022 was a great year with phones. Phones were more exciting from 2002 with the cameraphone revolution up to 2014 or 2016. Luster has really worn off since 2017.
