The Pixel 7 Pro may well be one of the best phones of 2022, but I still don't think it's a worthy upgrade over the Pixel 6 Pro since the Tensor G2 doesn't bring much improvement over the first generation Tensor. I don't think anyone with the Pixel 6 Pro will feel missed out.

So it has to be a better smartphone if it is going to be boasting an already used 1" sensor by the competition

Vivo X90 Pro+ is better than the Xiaomi 12S Ultra in pretty much every way.
OriginOS takes some time getting used to but it's simply a beautiful UI. Camera? Better as well. Much better, in fact. Well ngl, I only bought if for the camera. :) "Zeiss Natural Color" mode allows taking the most NATURAL looking pictures on a smartphone to date. And if you want pictures that are "Instagram ready" or whatevs, just don't enable Zeiss natural color. The only thing that's slightly disappointing is the mediocre audio quality in video and only up to 1080p 60fps video recording with the front facing camera. Personally I don't do vlogging so I don't care, but I understand it's a big issue for some people.
There is also the matter of removing Chinese bloatware apps, but thanks to the amazing people at XDA forums, I managed to remove ALL that useless crap.
And probably the most important part for a lot of people: Vivo X90 Pro+ is actually PERFECTLY USABLE as a PHONE in Europe. Not sure about 5G, but all the 4G bands used in my country are included (unlike on the Xiaomi).
