Counterpoint: Sony's smartphone camera sensor business is on the rise thanks to iPhone upgrades

17 January 2023
Meanwhile, Samsung dominates the 100+ megapixel segment. Also, it has shipped hundreds of millions of sensors with sub-0.7µm pixels.

If you want full manual control and granular modification of the scene and exposure triangle parameters to get the shot YOU WANT, you get their mirrorless cams and suitable lenses so you get real flexibility (i.e.: use anything from the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 to bazooka lenses to manual TTArtisan lenses with a sub-10MM FOV). That flexibility is what you need to get truly good photos.

And that it simply lacking in smartphone cameras which have ONE f-stop and ONE lens FOV without resorting to super small sensor sizes (less light to capture and process) or compromised performance (like the "85-125mm" on the 1 iv which can only perform well in daylight). Oof. That's why post-processing is essential to smartphone photography - to compensate for the limitations with the sensor size, not pass the problem off to the users like what Sony insists.

The phone is advertised to use manual mode not auto mode. And MKBHD didn't use manual. So you can't call it fair. I've seen a lot of reviews and comparisons from real photographers showing clearly that the Xperia can produce images that are way better than the iphones. For instance try taking a long exposure of a waterfall with an iphone you'll see the drops in the waterfall which is bad and terrible do that with a Sony and you'd get a picture similar to a mirrorless camera

This is some fat cap. Manual mode and auto mode do not produce the same results unless you set everything to auto in manual mode.

There's a reason why you change the settings yourself based on how you want it.

Go on it and just click on the right image on every image in the first test until you reach the first milestone and results will come in some order of BDG/DBG/GDB/etc Those three all iPhone, Nothing and Pixel 6a. It does it like that because it features those three the most and keeps them rotating. In my test runs by the time these three had 18 appearances One Plus had only 7. The longer you play the game even beyond Most Accurate slider the more chance you will get to vote on the others as they will eventually show up.

Strangely enough in my extensive voting Xperia 1 IV shared the fourth spot with 12 Ultra, both loosing only 4 times out of 12.
