Counterpoint: Sony's smartphone camera sensor business is on the rise thanks to iPhone upgrades

17 January 2023
Meanwhile, Samsung dominates the 100+ megapixel segment. Also, it has shipped hundreds of millions of sensors with sub-0.7µm pixels.

Domestoboto, 18 Jan 2023And to think that SONY PHONES using Sony sensors have some ... moreDo pixel peeping before saying a camera sucks.

Color accuracy matters and you dont need photos blowing up everything every time you shoot. There's also the infamous oil painting processing that plagued the iPhone 13 (reported by users and never by those shilltubers).

Sony is behind in auto post processing, but they sure let you manually control everything if you wish to. Not for everyone, sure, but you cant expect all products to be the same

Domestoboto, 18 Jan 2023"They want people to take those manual shots instead o... more"...which makes ZERO SENSE in a smartphone, IMHO."

If that's what you think then sure. It's about providing that experience of setting up your own shot. While their auto software isn't good, it's not complete trash where photos are unusable. The point-and-shoot can be significantly improved, but it's not as bad as some make it seem.

They take a different approach to photography than other companies which is why they still have dedicated shutter buttons on their phones.

"There's a reason smartphones have failed to make a dent on the demand for big mirrorless cameras like the A7iv or Fuji X-T5"

Sony isn't trying to put a dent on the demand for those cameras.

"Sony should just focus on better post-processing"

They should focus on better post-processing, I agree.

CargoJoe, 18 Jan 2023Because they don't utilise full auto mode like iPhone ... more"Sony also wants you to work on your photos instead of relying on what they give" ...which doesn't work with smartphones at all. I mean, it makes perfect sense with their big mirrorless cams, since you can control the scene and subject to get the better shot. But smartphone users often don't have the luxury of controlling the scene and subject.

They just want to capture a moment in a concert or kid running in the house instantly and get desirable photos every time, that's where Sony falls flat with their insistence that you take a lot of time to "work on your photos", which results in so many missed photos and chances...

I always thought Sony sensor is far superior than Samsung's, at the expense of price. You get better HDR and better light sensitivity. Only reason why Pixel didn't use it on their flagship is because of probable internal agreement with Samsung. But they have better processing so it's a given. Still, hope for them to adopt it again.

SuuperBaka, 18 Jan 2023I agree that Sony's auto mode sucks and needs a lot of... more"They want people to take those manual shots instead of just point and click" ...which makes ZERO SENSE in a smartphone, imho.

Their sensors are simply too small to capture enough data, light, and the scene to give the users enough space to adjust the exposure triangle - EV, ISO, and shutter speed - to their desired settings. There's a reason smartphones have failed to make a dent on the demand for big mirrorless cameras like the A7iv or Fuji X-T5, and yet Sony insists that we treat shooting on Xperia like we're shooting with either camera attached to a big zoom lens with bright f-stops.

Sony should just focus on better post-processing. Smartphones are literally made for point-and-shoots, not tedious manipulation and editing...

Domestoboto, 18 Jan 2023And to think that SONY PHONES using Sony sensors have some ... moreBecause they don't utilise full auto mode like iPhone or Pixels do and what you get on that phone is literally what you see inside that building. Remember that most of the post processing done is to enhance the photos. Realistically, it doesn't look as eye pleasing as the camera suggest.

Sony also wants you to work on your photos instead of relying on what they give. Take a picture, edit and then post. Pretty much what the camera industry has been doing for half a century. Smartphones only curb that to better the ease of use regular people with zero camera knowledge. Better hope they have good enough auto mode in the future.

Also it's not technically $1699. My country sells it for $1299 for the 12GB/256GB models. The States is priced at $1699 because it's the full 512GB. Good for more storage than what you actually need.

Domestoboto, 18 Jan 2023And to think that SONY PHONES using Sony sensors have some ... moreI agree that Sony's auto mode sucks and needs a lot of improvement, but they treat their phone cameras like how you treat a normal camera. They want people to take those manual shots instead of just point and click.

I really do enjoy taking my time on my Xperia to get a clean shot, but sometimes I wish I could have a decent auto mode as well. Hopefully, the new Xperia 1v will improve that.

And to think that SONY PHONES using Sony sensors have some of the worst-performing cameras in the entire mobile space. I mean, look at the MKBHD camera test results, the Xperia 1 iv, a $1500+ phone, ended DEAD LAST and was easily demolished by a phone that does lightshows (Nothing 1), the "normal" iPhone 14, and a $300 phone (Pixel 6a)! They also insist that you have a chart of the exposure triangle and know how to fiddle manually to get a "good" photo like you're using an A9 or A7iv with a very expensive zoom lens!

Why can't they just copy Apple with their camera "excellence"? They already make the HARDware for that, now they just need the SOFTware to help them.

with Sony's new fab already on the way, they'll just dominate the sensor market more.

Kishida is also keen on putting Japan back on the world map as a major chip manufacter, so theres that.

Sony's smartphone division is declining but hey the camera sensor business is rising. Ironic.
