Just as a refresher:

A14: 2+4 CPU, 4 gpu, 4GB/6GB (great for iPhone)
A15: 2+4 CPU, 5 gpu, 4GB/6GB

M1: 4+4 CPU, 7/8 gpu, 8GB/16GB (great for iPad Mini/Pro)
M2: 4+4 CPU, 8/10 gpu, 8GB/16GB/24GB (great for Macbook Air)

M1p: 6+2 CPU, 14 gpu, 16GB/32GB
M2p: 6+4 CPU, 16 gpu, 16GB/32GB (great for Mac Mini PC)

M1P: 8+2 CPU, 14/16 gpu, 16GB/32GB (great for 14in MBP)
M2P: 8+4 CPU, 16/19 gpu, 16GB/32GB

M1X: 8+2 CPU, 24/32 gpu, 32GB/64GB
M2X: 8+4 CPU, 30/38 gpu, 32GB/64GB/96GB (great for 16in MBP)

…the other point to make, is to get extra RAM and the second cheapest SSD. The Memory will be needed in the future and the RAM can’t be upgraded after, whilst Storage can be upgraded, stepping up one-tier in SSD nets you a high-end fast model, instead of a midrange budget module. This applies

For instance, a MBA with these specs M2, 10gpu, 24GB, 512GB SSD is worth the upgrade from the base model MBA which has M1, 7gpu, 8GB, 256GB SSD. We're talking about a solid +50% performance increase for a mere +25% increase in price. Whereas the price increase for the MBP 14inch aren't justified when thinking about value, due to thermal constraints. Lastly the MBP 16inch is so expensive, that has a different quality in that luxury price bracket, and spending more to get more suddenly makes sense, since you have the thermal headroom to make the most of that hardware.

Also, the new Radeon 680M will still be way enough to watch 8k video even when not on the plug, so who really cares, if I have to render I just switch to the RTX4070 which leaves every iGPU in the dust, also the slow M2 in comparison.

Just wait for the first real world comparisons with 7940HS. Also, the Intel 12900HX reaches 35k in passmark. How hard it would have to throttle to reach the 22k-ish numbers of the M1 max? Not gonna happen.. Also the new Intel i7-13xxP and AMD U series won't throttle as much, while being much faster.

The inclusion of Neural Engine is a big plus for M series SoCs too, please wake me up when AMD powered laptops can finally hardware accelerate PyTorch.
