It was developed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras.

They won't be sending hitmen to kill you, FFS. However, there is every chance your own government will track your data to know your political inclination, perception, opinion, etc. Which would definitely come in handy to suppress protests.

Reminds me of Huawei's HarmonyOS that was "based on Android" yet was somehow competing with it (according to Huawei themselves)
I wonder how can someone fall in such banter. It's a custom ROM. There are many custom ROMs maintained and developed by Indians. Don't know what's unique in this to publicise it so much

It seems this has become the default way to launch a product by Indian tech firms. Make something just to make something (not to solve some problem), wrap it in tricolor/saffron, name it India/Bhar/Bharat, enjoy unlimited funding.
Micromax did this few years ago (and have retreated to the same cave they were in since past decade), now this trash will follow the same

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2023We can correct the narrative as it is not an Operating Syst... moreKey difference is that this is without 23 Google Service packages mandatory on Google Android OS no CTS compliance and no MADA either. No Chrome browser or any default apps
So for example google can not get the location access and the browser data as well no Google ad id etc.
The aim is to put an AOSP but not google PS on any commercial off the shelf mobile and make it available for secure custom use.

But then India's a big and an ever-growing market as well, so the Government may be able to force companies to do it, and it's a high possibility that the companies would agree. We can also see new Indian mobile companies entering the market. So, overall, it's a win-win situation for India.

An operating system means you built it from scratch, or at least used very minimal unix kernel underpinings.
                        This is still Android.

There's nothing wrong in calling it an operating system. OneUI, Oxygen OS are operating systems too(what else does OS in Oxygen OS mean?). And Ubuntu is not a Linux skin, so are OneUI and Oxygen OS.

Anonymous, 23 Jan 2023This is a good read: https://www.google.com/amp/s/wap.busin... moreThe article is pay-walled. However my understanding is that android itself is not too bad at security. But 3rd party ROMs can be a problem because the boot loader needs to be unlocked for end users to install it. Security of the ROM/variant/flavor also depends on the capability of the team creating it. However compared to most desktop OSes, Android should require less configuration by end user to get it to an acceptable security/privacy level. I don't know about Mac, but even Linux needs SELinux/app armor to use the security to implement privacy. In my opinion, security is not very useful if a closed source app can just steal your data. And, while vetted open source apps might solve this issue, it is not a viable solution to everything. Security and privacy should be implemented at OS level by default. I feel that windows is the worst offender here. Considering how data collection and monetization are proceeding, I feel my trust in common things like even video games wavering. Windows does not even have the basic security data practices like secure by default, least privilege, security in depth etc. Also the whole OS is closed source.

All this is to facilitate government to spy on their own people in the name of “security”, probably the current Apple or android OS doesn’t allow them to get the level of access they want.

Why each and every mobile that has internet connectivity contains "facebook manager" file in application files irrespective of whether someone is willing to install facebook or not. I think this is the biggest spyware that is being used worldwide.

So when I buy a new phone, say Samsung, the phone's OS has to be 'flashed' and this one installed anew. The methodology needs to be also put forward to completely install on top of the OS installed on the new phone; it has to be CLEAR, Complete and effective for even novice end-users to compete this task without BRICKING a newly-bought phone with ZERO mistakes... then it will be embraced.
