Another thing to consider is that probably those oversharpened photo samples of S23 Ultra were the result of active Scene optimizer setting, which adds extra sharpening, contrast and saturation. Turning off the Scene optimizer results in much more natural photos with the Auto mode, though they still include some sharpening. This is why I recommend to use either the 12MP Professional mode or the 50MP Auto mode downsampled to 12MP.

Simply use the Professional mode and you get a very natural looking photo. "Samsung" changed the way they process they photos back in 2020. My S10e initially made natural pictures, then a year later and several camera updates the photos went considerably overcharpened and consisting ugly halos around trees and fences. That was the reason to get S21 and use its 64MP mode and downsample to 9MP 16:9 ratio for natural looking photos. But my S10e still can do natural photos with the Professional mode, so most likely the new S23 Ultra also could benefit from that. Note that Samsung's Professional mode will not use sharpening at all, and won't apply such an aggressive noise reduction and HDR, meaning you get a softer, natural image with a bit more noise and slightly blown highlights due to the lesser HDR. Also, the Professional mode lets you choose Auto settings for the ISO, exposure, white balance etc, meaning you can use it for point-and-shoot, just like the regular Auto mode.

Anonymous, 03 Feb 2023You know that most people have PCs, right?Yes, I know. And you point is? Hard for me to tell, how people usually view these photos. Some probably are looking at them only on the mobile devices, and sharing thought social media. That group should be ok I guess with over sharpening. Rest, that open them on pcs, laptops, TVs, I think is going to hate that look. I don't know which group is larger. In close group of my friends, the second one. But looking at some comments here, I start to think that maybe I am wrong, and actually more people look on them only on their mobile devices.

SShock, 03 Feb 2023I looked at some other samples yesterday and S23 Ultra look... moreNot just sharpening, the denoising is way too aggressive as well. And I completely agree with that, samsung should give controls to control the amount of processing done and I have to give props to them for having a "reduce sharpening" option in their camera assistant app. Wish there was a way to tone down the compression and processing as a whole. Photos are overcompressed as well imo, making noise look even uglier

And it is not easy to fix oversharpened images. They have halos and other artifacts, which blurring will not fix.

Plovdiv, 02 Feb 2023 The best way to shoot quality photos with the new Samsung ... moreYou know they used to do that until One UI 2 if I recall. Or maybe it was One UI 3. Anyways, you used to have the option but now you no longer do. I guess they want your internal storage to fill up quicker so you buy cloud storage.

I'm soooooo not agree with you.

I see a good improvement and I LOVE more sharpened pictures.

And for those who doesnt: it's easy to blur a pictures "too" sharpened... but it's impossible to sharpern a blurry pictures with good results!

The pictures are so ugly due to oversharpenning, I would have think this is a joke if it was not coming from a professional site as GSMArena. Why samsung is selling such poor image processing at such prices, while removing features ? (expandable storage anyone ?)
I will move from this joke brand, maybe the Pixel (no expandable storage but not expensive and far better image quality) or the Xperia.

My Xiaomi Mi Note 10 (first gen 108 mp - output 27 mp) has better detail than Samsung s23 Ultra camera. I was expecting much better results. :)

[deleted post]I'm not getting into an arguement, here: these are Jpegs from the camera displayed as-is - GSMA aren't heavily compressing anything or artificially adjusting colours: these ARE representative. And, in this case, they represent the kind of god awful over sharpening I've not seen in 3 or 4 years. Feel free to fanboy: these aren't good images. We have eyes. Last word.

Just like the S22 took "not so good" pictures when it was launched and got better with software updates, the S23 will also likely get better with software updates. Phone companies listen to complaints by consumers and make their phones better via software updates. Apple, Xiaomi, Huawei etc...They all do it.
