Internet publicly Has been booming since the late 80s. However as far as privacy is concerned you make or break that on your own. However a lot of people mistaken public data with non-public data and privacy with algorithm tracking etc...most people have no clue what they are referring to when it comes to privacy because they look at it subjectively and hence view it from a some what bubble mentality.

You should instead say "I do not know how to mitigate data collection, therefore nobody else does... and even if they do I do not want to hear it as it makes me look uninformed and/or lazy to inform myself".
For starters, and with no extra knowledge requirements... use browser isolation. Use a browser for each task (Firefox, Brave, LibreWolf, chromium). Do not conduct your everyday searches in a browser where you have logged in to your google account. Minimize the usage of phone apps as well as web searches, try conducting most of your activities through your pc. Furthermore, if you can use a linux computer for personal use (even if your work pc requires Mac or Win) you are again taking a chunk of the data off their table. And if you can install a custom ROM on your phone you eliminate the 24/7 location tracking and will not be carrying a personally identifiable (to Google or Apple) device.
Your phone carrier will still have a loose idea of your location based on cell tower conections, however you will have limited big tech's effortless data gathering.
Websites may attempt browser fingerprinting, but having compartimentalized your activities this limits the creation of a complete profile (eg., searched for flowers, origami, cricket and listened to the BBC and purchased baby diapers), and you make it hard for them to put a real name on your profile (eg, we know that person's full name is Mary Stephenson).

MANY PEOPLE ARE USING TELEGRAM.
If you are in Europe, Eastern Europe, Middle East, Africa, a furry, an artist, or someone who works in the adult industry, Telegram is the program of choice.
Line is for Asia. WeChat is for China.
Whatsapp is for the Americas.
And anything else is well, Skype. Because old people are old.

Telegram may have many gimmick features, but still majority of people prefer whatsapp because of the simplicity and relatively more secure than Telegram.
I use both Whatsapp(since 2014) and Telegram(since 2018), but i only check my Telegram app like only 5 minutes per week, because nobody uses it.

I don't believe Wired to be a trustworthy publication, they seem to be aligned with the western military-industrial complex propaganda. They don't support Telegram because they don't have control over it (hopefully).
About verifying the keys: I use Signal and when I meet with a friend in person, we verify together the keys to be identical. Afterwards, we continue the conversation online and, if Signal announces me that the key has changed, that means a man in the middle is watching our conversation or my friend changed his smartphone. And I call my friend to verify what happened. I was never attacked, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

If they match, then you are talking to the person you want to talk. For key matching, the best to use would be calling. Now, people might think that that's dumb because you're sending in plain sight. It is actually not, because nobody expects it, thousands of people use this lines every minute and at the end, you just transmit an info of something representative and not the actuall encryption algorithm, nobody is able to see that, if it would be, would beat the whole purpose of encryption. But you are mostly safe just asking your partner for something so private, that only he can know. Would be pretty much the same thing as with key comparison. If you are tough under surveillance, the best for you would be to use no smartphone, feature phone or camera, so telegram or any other chat app would not be able to protect people under surveillance, man in the middle attacks are very easy to produce, especially by the guvernments. If you got to that point, you're probably in deep sh anyway and should hide faster then you can say fast.
