Anonym, 20 Feb 2023Interesting stuff ahead. WiFi 6 was a big upgrade, WiFi 6E ... moreWifi 6e is different.. it actually uses 6ghz while wifi 6 uses 5 and 2.4 Ghz simultaneously.
I have phone with wifi 6 (not sure if I have wifi 6e as I cannot choose 6ghz only 2,4 and 5 bands available, but I have option mode saying '' use wifi 6'' which says ; wifi 6 protocol provides faster connection'' which means when enabled will STILL use 5ghz with 2ghz ame time but there is no 6ghz spectrum.. But if my phone is upstairs and my laptop downstairs I can see only one or 2 bars on laptop wifi signal... So when I change band to 2,4 I have perfect signal.. and laptops showing wifi ax because I have enabled that wifi 6 mode. If I turn that mode off on laptop then showing ac so wifi 5 ...
So with wifi 7 it will be even worse... you will have to have router or hotspot like max one metre from laptops or wifi devices..

Interesting stuff ahead. WiFi 6 was a big upgrade, WiFi 6E was a smaller step that didn't quite make it everywhere (because of the "red tape" and regulatory unclarity some regions still have on the new 6Ghz band).
However, the biggest most import thing about any WiFi AP is continued support, because this equipment usually remains in use for many years (over adecade even). Manufacturers are happy to churn disposable e-waste as long as it improves their bottom line; need a firmware update to fix that bug/security vulnerability? Buy our new sh*t!
We, as consumers, should demand better. Having FOSS drivers and OpenWRT support is a great start to fight e-waste, but make no mistake, that solution is not for the masses. The sad thing about it is that we barely even get that first step -- only Mediatek and, to some extent, Qualcomm care about FOSS drivers.
Kind of ironic the company that churns SoCs without care for proper AOSP support in the smartphone world does the good thing in the WiFi world. Don't get your hopes up Android fans, it's not like Mediatek saw the light -- their WiFi involvement comes from the Ralink acquisition, and this great support is just Ralink continuing their good work under a new name brand. If only Qualcomm took their WiFi support as seriously as their Android SoCs... they have very great stuff, but with almost third-class citizen status for FOSS drivers (not even second-class, it's clear that often times they don't even test their sh*t). Still better than Broadcom, or any of the other players.

Well written article and informative, but I have an objection on the meaning of Wi-Fi.
WiFi alliance said that WiFi doesn't mean Wireless Fidelity

Rodolf, 19 Feb 2023No such thing as "beta" Features are final and... moreLMAO it is more or less due to regulatory reasons. Check Xiaomi in China. Wi-Fi 7 has not (or has just) been granted a certificate in China. They promised to OTA to Wi-Fi 7.

I upgraded my router recently to an Asus RT-AX58U, which supports wifi 6. My only device that supports it is my Galaxy S21. Transferring files across my LAN hasn't resulted in a speed increase. While I'm happy with 65MB/s, I was expecting some noticeable difference (though that's not the reason I bought the router).

Well written article, nice that you went back so far in time to the PDAs and infrared and the WiFi additional modules. I think the GameBoy Advance or the Nintendo DS were able to use such a module as well to enable WiFi. And concerning the last question, WiFi 4 or 5 is enough for me, and higher speeds would also mean higher service provider prices for a difference I most likely won’t notice.

But it's very nice to look back, the last time I connected via wifi was on the iPhone, a friend's first iPhone, I remember it like now! in 2007 a nice memory, then with a Nokia later... I remember going to the nearest shopping center. download games, videos and Java applications, there were many people doing the same hahahahahahaha at what times

All very well, but all this charm goes down the drain, when the company you hire gives you an obsolete modem for the basics and there is no way to find a modem that has an output for the fiber optic connector, you have to pull make a bridge to have 2 lit pots

I am so happy with this current ordinary WIFI and no think of updating it with the newer extraordinary ones. I just imagine that I should use the very best of WIFI version when we are living in this world like in the "minority report" movie (2002)

"beta" wifi 7
... moreNo such thing as "beta"
Features are final and clear (Red Magic 8 for example already has 320Mhz and multilink operation support those are the most important features), however, manufacturers want to save every penny so they didn't do it this year other than companies that make gaming phones.

6GHz wifi in the US is a big mistake
It should follow the Europe on giving the most 6GHz to mobile carrier.
Wifi should have 3 frequency - low, medium and high
low for range, and high for speed
For Speed Wifi should just use 11GHz or 12GHz
