YouTube begins testing “1080p Premium” stream option on mobile app

      Another tech company that has come to regret crushing their competition by giving everything away for free.
      Who trusts Google enough to give them much money? I paid extra to rent a movie in UHD and they delivered a stuttering pixelated mess in 640x480@30i. Getting a refund requires fighting Google's customer service bots. Oh, and it was a known problem but they were upselling to UHD anyways.

        There was times when you didnt have to pay for youtube and when you didnt have to watch stupid ads in between videos YET youtube was profitable enough to become a GIANT in its class. Its sad !

            I agree that 1080p indeed has a low bitrate. Just check any gaming videos or maybe music videos with lots of effects, doesn't look as good as 1080p should. I use 4K whenever available just because of bitrate even though my monitor isn't 4K.

            Hopefully they don't increase the family plan cost or change terms like Netflix.

                I‘d really only need 720p on a phone but bump it up to at least 1440p because anything lower looks horribly compressed.

                  And yet we are still using YouTube because of the lack of competition 🙃

                    1080p is already good enough for my needs.. Give us 480p premium instead to have a nice "good enough" option!

I h... moreCan't disagree with you, but would be better if they removed YouTube Music that nobody use and reduce the price even more. I mean with premium I can simply listen to music in background without the need to switch to another app.
                      Not to mention Spotify!

                        YouTube Premium is actually not as bad as people think. I have the family plan which I share with 4 people, its really such a better experience especially with all the unskippable ads on that platform recently. It's priced fairly IMO
