I think the succession of Android OS is way faster than it can mature. High-end models (latest OS) are overhyped but the mid/lowrange (and often w/dated OS) models actually sell more. And people/subscribers don't usually replace their phones when support for updates gets discontinued. Not as often as every 6 or 12 or even two years. Definitely not as often as people (and trolls) in blogs and forums talk or lie about.

I reckon we will see 4.2 on S3 after S4 launches.

Wow! Gingerbread is still on top. I guess these are all the affordable smartphones (usually unbranded) in the Third World that sell from $60 ~ $100. This is what I love about open-source OSes like Android. It's very flexible that someone can develop something for every need - whether it's high-end phones like the Vertu Ti or cheap unbranded Asian phones. Let's keep the Movement going so that Android and Linux will propagate into more phones, tablets, PCs, laptops, TV, settops, netbooks, etc. It should become affordable to more people - and give even the poor affordable access to online knowledge.

This is because Sony and others have their own modifications of Android and need first to test them before lauch their modes

Why it is so difficult for Sony, HTC, Samsung,LG to update their phones with latest Jelly Bean 4.2.2 since Google can do it easily on their Nexus devices?

You buy a phone and expect it as is, the companies providing updates are doing it as a favour. No suprises then that we have different OS versions as we all have different phones.

This is not Apple with one phone.

Once the handset is sold the companies generally can't be bothered to support them after a few months. I bought a SIM free Xperia ray(2011) and had one minor update.
