Asus unveils the ROG Ally, a handheld gaming console to rival Steam Deck

04 April 2023
Looks like a promising alternative to the Steam Deck but we still have lots of questions.

Limited hardware support because it's not real android. That's why I don't want emulated android on a pc. A lot of apps/games doesn't run smoothly too. Why don't you run windows on your phone, since it's so easy? Shouldn't even require root.

I don't understand why people here keep comparing this with Switch. Both are two different things but on similar shape. Switch is based on weaker Tegra's ARM Chip, and ROG Ally and Steam Deck based on AMD's x86-64 Zen chip which is more power-intensive. Ally and Deck are more intended for heavy PC games, meanwhile Switch is limited to games on Nintendo eShops (well if you're good enough at jailbreaking you can install Android on it). I know you can use Android emulator in Windows, but I'm pretty sure it will give you such huge pain with that limited power.

By that logic aren't all consoles just the same?
Also no never compare any mobile games to PC or dedicated-device (like gaming console) Games. You will never know how great is play on those "specialised device" until you try them.

If you think 99% of the target customers is plugin for the pc. Isn't that the same thing for mobile users? You think playing games on mobile would last you an entire day on a single charge?

Another thing. Majority of smartphones don't have upgradable storage nowadays. So if you got like a 512GB model. That's the only storage you would get unless you use OTG. Which is a hassle.

Because of the screen enhancements compared to the Steam Deck, this will hopefully be viable for remote play off of a more powerful gaming PC. I tried the Steam Deck for that and it's 720p screen simply wasn't up to the task. (Plus I think the feature might have been bugged on that software version given how low quality the stream was, and I ended up returning it for that reason.)

Nokia n95 was seen with windows 95 as os. A Texas calculator was seen with windows. But they required more work than necessary. Exactly as your attempts.

Problems with people want to max Deck play heavy games at high quality thats why they got bad battery life.

Limit deck to 5W, play games at 480p or 720p depend on how heavy game is, limit fps to 30fps you get better battery and higher quality than switch

Pc gamers did test deck and switch using witcher 3, at medium setting Deck got 4 hours locked to 30fps while switch got around 2 and half to 3 hours.
