The upcoming gaming handheld will be available from mid-June.

My turquoise Switch Lite now has an issue with the left analog stick not being able to move right. First notice it this morning while playing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe using Lemmy on Bell Cup. I couldn't turn correctly.

Calibrated it multiple times and used the rubbing alcohol with Q-tips method. Doesn't work. I've owned NES to Wii + Game Boy, GBA SP, and DS Lite. Other than the toaster NES where we used to blow into the cartridge or game slot, I've never ever had an issue with a Nintendo product. Nintendo products rarely fail on me like this.

This sucks. Only $90 and it worked perfectly for 7 months and still looks new. In fact, I got it exactly 7 months ago on October 3. Should've got the Switch OLED because you can always replace the Joy-Cons. But I really don't want to carry that device around. The great thing about the Switch OLED Is that screen and kickstand. Can accept more third-party Bluetooth controllers too.

I may just wait for the next Switch since I expect it will be 100% backwards compatible. Will re-download all my games onto to that one. No wonder I'm a bigger PlayStation fan. My Vita slim which I've owned for 6 years is back being my all-time favorite handheld. It's fairly dependable. Had some crashes here and there. It's in slightly worse condition when I first got it than the Switch but still looks better than it.

My Vita is modded and Adrenaline to run PSP and PS1 games was crashing constantly that I had to keep powering it down by pressing the power button for 30 seconds which got annoying. Added the plug-in to fix the two-touch crash and it's back being fine. But never any issues with the analog sticks or d-pad. And battery is at 94% health which is unbelievable if that's accurate.

I guess I'll be in the market for a new handheld. I'm deliberating between Steam Deck, Ally ROG, GPD Win 4, and GPD Win Max 2. I'll just emulate the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World. Don't need to re-buy since I hear Wii U emulation is very good on the Deck.

€120 is a big gap compared to the USA's $51 gap. But I'd still take the Asus over the Valve. Sorry, but Linux gaming is still not there yet.

If Logitech gives the G Cloud a better processor, then I'll buy that. If not, Steam Deck vs mobile for me anyways.

Dr. Watson, 03 May 2023I say it's still quite competitive with the high-end v... moreIt's $600 from what I've been reading. It's $200 more than the lowest-end of the Steam Deck but only $70 more of the Deck's same 256 GB configuration.

I would rather save the $200 and get the cheapest Steam Deck. A 512 GB microSD is on sale for $35 this week. Check RetroCorps' community posts on YouTube. Russ is always giving everyone a heads up on sales.

I hate spending a lot of money on video games. I'm pretty much a casual to semi-casual gamer by this point. At 42, I'll play video games no more than an hour per day. It can go to as high as 3 hours but that's rare.

Gaming is just a recreation to have on the side when things gets boring from surfing the web or streaming to watch something. But I'm not obsessed with it like I was 25-30 years ago when I was still in my adolescence and teens. So I much prefer to buy handhelds for as little money as possible.

May 2017: PS Vita slim, $100
Oct 2022: Switch Lite, $90 (came with BOTW and case)

Got the Vita off Craigslist. Got the Switch Lite from OfferUp. Love them both pretty equally. But I love that I got them for $100 or less. Vita was only recently modded 4 month ago. It's a blast to play Dead Or Alive 5 Plus in story mode.

I may scour OfferUp to try to find a used 64 GB Steam Deck for $200. A lot of them can be bought in pristine condition too since most of them were rarely used. Collected dust as the owner didn't have time to play it.

Any clue which retailers in Europe are going to get it? Asus will need well-known high-street big hitters in each major country if they want to outdo Valve. So in the UK, Currys PC World or John Lewis rather than something more niche or purely online such as eBuyer.

I don't think it's a Steam Deck killer since that still has the better ecosystem and online community support. But I think the ROG Ally is going to be a great alternative. The key isn't price although it's only $50 more than the Deck's highest configuration. I read the 256 GB is at $600 which is $70 more than the Deck's 256 GB.

The key to the Ally is it will be available in retail stores. Places like Best Buy have weekly discounts. They have Black Fridays. Imagine getting a ROG Ally at $100-$200 off? I still believe the best value is the $400 Steam Deck. Easy to change the SSD to 1 TB. Then add another 1 TB microSD. Games these days are huge. I think a 1 TB microSD should be mandatory.

You can buy 512 GB cards for $35 on sale these days. That's perfect for maybe a Switch but not a Deck. A 512 microSD might fit 4 or 5 modern games at best. So many games are over 150 GB. Deck is still the king of PC handhelds in my eyes. It's not the best-looking with the best size. Doesn't have the best specs. The display isn't great. But it still offers the best value with the best support.

If 799€ is with VAT included, then it's a very compelling option. Imagine a complete gaming device. I mean, for that money, you can barely get a decent mid range graphic card these days and you still need everything around it to even function. Gaming laptops tend to cost well beyond 1000€ if they are worth anything and there is 300 billion variants. These handheld consoles are much more unified and consolidated, ASUS will offer 2 versions of Ally instead of 500 laptops they offer now. And even if this expands over time it'll never be this bad. If 799€ is without VAT, that means it'll be around 1000€ depending on EU country. That's where you begin to have issues with pricing...
