I can't sign, because your aim can be achieved WITH a 5 inch, FullHD screen. It's all down to the design of the phone (real design, not just pretty, pretties).
My personal test is the 'back pocket' test. Will the phone fit in a back pocket without poking out? That CAN be achieved if you think a bit laterally - it doesn't have to be the size of an S3/S4. I've a sketched out design in front of me.
Now just need some manufacturer to catch up.

djst, 16 Apr 2013One more point is missed - BATTERY, what the hell is going ... moreyou're kinda missing the point. having a bigger screen is a huge factor as to why today's phones have terribly short battery life. On my android my screen eats roughly 60% of the battery and its "only" 4.3 inch. The only manufacturer that has got the battery part right is motorola, their phones have the biggest battery to phone size ratio.

well, i agree that the screen is getting too large, but why manufacturer no longer make something with physical keyboard, there are people (at least me) that loves physical keyboard, sometimes touchscreen won't response accordingly if your hand is a bit wet or oily, and to be able to type perfectly the screen must be water and oil free to hinder erratic typing, not to mention the feedback you get is way less than the physical one...

Totally agree on this. I'm a small man with small hands and large phones are hard to carry around. I'll never leave my trusty Galaxy W for something like a giant Galaxy s4 or Xperia Z, those phones are crap for me

I swore before I would not go beyond 4 inch screen
Now I'm thinking 4.3 is the max
Anything beyond that loses one hand ease of use.
I want something that size

I'm currently waiting for the Xperia cybershot..
Now if only Sony would produce a 4.3 inch version of it I wouldn't hesitate once to buy it.
These are the specs I want in my next phone
It has to be Sony
4.3 inch screen
Snapdragon 600 at least (quad)
2 gb ram
720p led screen
13 mp camera with large sensor
2000 mah battery at least

Today's phones are so large, that you can no longer use them with a single hand, they barely even fit in a single hand. Now with the "next" generation phones going to 5.8" and over 6" it is like holding your tablet into your ear! it's ridicules!
I've got an HTC Desire Z which is a 3.7" phone, i bought for my sister the HTC Desire S which is also 3.7", cause we both have a small hand and these phones fit comfortably and are easy to use. If there was a Desire S sized phone with new hardware, i'd probably buy it.

You must be an apple employee who thinks that the whole world will be happy with 2-3 size options.

I am an ex iPhone and S2 owner now on a 5.5" Note 2. Personally i could never go back to a tiny 4" screen.
BUT i do agree that there should be a high end android device around 4-4.2". I dont think the sales will be brilliant but the option should be there.

I totally agree!!! it's just that screens should be appropriate and ergonomic for our hands like iPhones that's really paying attention on how convenient people would use their phones. I'LL JOIN YOUR QUEST!!

How about we add a 72hr battery and, since that would probably require ignoring the idea of less than a centimeter in thickness, a camera that can rival a good compact?
