Distraneurin, 23 May 2023I think Sony should lead the game in smartphone photography... moreThey already do but most people are indoctrinated by Samsung and Apple marketing and think taking a photo just means pressing a button and out comes social media ready picture.

Smartphones have to be in a thin form factor, which means it loses to DSLR in challenging/low light/rapid photography.

And Google is very shrewd. They will start cutting features before phones challenge DSLRs for real. Like they cut off hardware based DSD audio playback starting Android 10, because it would kill dedicated audio players.

I hope they don't corrupt the DSLR world with spy stuff, the one that mobile industry is suffering from.

kupfernigk, 21 May 2023I've been a Sony phone user since the early Compacts. ... moreIt depends on the type of photo you so, if you don't do point and shoot, you will never change your mirrorless with a phone, in my case my Canon M6mkII is miles away better compared to my S23U at 50mpx in any kind of photo except for video that I prefer the S23U.
Besides that, if you go to photo compare from Gsmara and you compare de S23U at 50mpx downscaled to 12mpx with the Xperia, S23U is much better than Sony... Xperia 1 V is way behind the S23U in all senses and if Sony updates the firmware of the Xperia with the same periodicity of the crap Linkbuds S, forget about the Xperia...

kupfernigk, 21 May 2023You do know that the limit on phone camera resolution is ma... moreToo much theory without testing, I tested on my S23 ultra 50mpx and 12mpx, the lens have difficulty to resolve towards the edge but if you downsample to 12mpx, you get much better results even if the lens are not able to resolve.

When no Infinix or Tecno as candidate?

Digdigfig, 21 May 2023I know, but the mere fact that they decide to go with a 8mp... moreYou do know that the limit on phone camera resolution is mainly the lens, not the sensor? Sensors with very high photosite count can use pixel binning to improve noise reduction and so get a higher sensor yield than, say, a 12MPx sensor which needs all the sites to be nesr perfect. But the overall lens resolution won't be more than 6-8MPx because in this world we obey the laws of optics.

I've been a Sony phone user since the early Compacts. If you buy a Sony phone you're doing it for the audio and the reliability of the cameras, which are not as overprocessed as those of Apple, Samsung and the Chinese.
The downside is that they won't automatically give you what the algorithms have decided is the look of the day. If you want that you're going to need to use PhotoShop (or GIMP for that matter). What you won't get is the "AI" sometimes adding nonexistent detail.
I currently have an Experia 5 Mk III and see no reason to change it any time in the near future. It's on Android 13 and is bug free. The 1 is overkill for what I do. The periscope camera works well and means I rarely take out the DSLR these days.
Just be aware that being small volume Sony phones cost more. If you don't want to pay the premium, there are plenty of others.

Canon is late to the party once again

PorkHotdog, 20 May 2023Samsung & Apple absolutely do not need any partnership ... morebecause all they care is to show off their back design.
