Canon looking to partner with a smartphone manufacturer

We try to narrow down the potential candidates.

moerutoukon, 20 May 2023Canon itself can manufacture phones. In fact, they used to ... morecanon could manufacture smartphones, but their main focus is on cameras and lenses.

We'd get much better budget phone cameras if they scrapped those and put all the savings into the main camera. A phone that would usually get like a Samsung GW1, could get an IMX766. Which while that's not the latest, that's still a crazy improvement. I use an LG V60 which has the same GW1 sensor used in the Realme GT Neo 2, Redmi Note 11T Pro+, and LG wing. It's not the best but I've gotten some incredible shots with it. It's not going to turn night into day in a second like an IMX989, but if you mount it on a tripod, you can see stars. I took this picture with the LG V60(RAW+JPG):

Distraneurin, 21 May 2023Color sience for once. All cameras have awfull skin tones, ... moreJust out of curiosity have you tried Sony phones? If so what do you think of those? I've heard Sony sticks to very natural colours.

They have revolutionized night photography. Whether canon could do better I don't know, but Vivo's proven that the ISP built into modern flagship processors isn't nearly as good as brute force dedicated ISP.

Huawei is dying, banned in the us, barely selling in eu. Don't think canon even considers huawei as a potential partner

Distraneurin, 21 May 2023Color sience for once. All cameras have awfull skin tones, ... moreI don't see Canon as the software powerhouse that will revolutionize color science in the current smartphone landscape. They are really good at making ISPs soldered to the camera boards that will do that job, but that is not how things get done in the smartphone world -- the major SoCs already come with builtin ISPs, the real work is fixing the output in software.

Furthermore, color science is a pretty big deal, but there is only so much anyone can do with such small sensors and tiny lenses. Yes, smartphone cameras are now much larger and so are the lenses, but lets get real: when compared with a real camera they are still tiny tiny.

IMHO the real big shortcoming in Android is video, not color science. Maybe Canon would make a difference there?

                      Me , 21 May 2023No way it’s Huawei I don't think so.

Huawei has a heavy burden: The bans and sanctions that it carries with it prevent it from selling well in many markets such as Europe and I don't think Canon is interested in that.

                      Not the case with Honor.

That will be a awesome phone if they make one came from successor Canon Cameras for sure many will buy it!

I hope that an historical photo manufacturer like Canon will help instil in the smartphone makers a cultural change for more respect for real life representation.
Samsung being one of worst offenders in "plastifying" reality.

                              - Tecno has potential if they really want to release a flat (not the foldable one) flagship phone.
                              - Realme's potential is 50-50 chance, since Realme is more like price-to-performance phone where camera is not their main priority compared to their sister company Oppo and OnePlus.
                              - Huawei and Honor also have potential, but Honor is the bigger one since they're the one that has bigger market on worldwide nowadays.
                              - Asus also has potential since Asus looks care enough about their camera department on their Zenfone 9.
                              - I'm not sure about Motorola though.
However, this is just my opinion though. Feel free to correct me if you want.

Non of that is true, Canon will never work with those companies, they will probably make a Canon Phone manufactured by Foxxcon or something, you really have to spend more time studying materials and do a slightly better job predicting. 😉
