Dometalican, 22 May 2023I would be very surprised if not getting a Pro-i ii last ye... moreBe sure they would never make it midrange.
But flagship instead, even if retail price goes $1700-2000.
Sony was able to find costumers for Pro ($2500) and Pro-i ($1800)
Dont be surprised if it is based on 1 series instead of 5.

It's just clamshell foldable phone and thats it. There use to be clamshell phones and were never advertised as compact phones. As the phones got so small that clamshell were just the same size as normal phones.

When the big screen touch screen trend started then they had compact segment.
Now it's foldable segment and they should not name it as compact category cause it's just clamshell foldable. Also people who want a compact phone usually dont want foldable phone or clamshell phone on that point.

And clamshell foldable gets in the compact size only in folded state so unfolded it wont be compact

It seems to be that only Motorola knows how to make foldable flip phones with useful cover displays. Who knows if Samsung will make it useful for their Z Flip 5 or will be limited to certain apps and widgets again if you're not using CoverScreen OS or SamSprung?

Motorola is marketing that you can use the keyboard on the cover display with the Razr+/Razr 40 Ultra. You can already do this years before on the Razr 5G except you can only use the default Google keyboard. Not a third-party one like SwiftKey which I prefer. Because if you have it set to default, it stays that way for even the inner display.

I rarely type from the cover display any way. I use it mostly to stream videos or Google Maps. The best flip of this year is between the Razr+ or Z Flip 5. The Z Flip 5 has the better specs with the overclocked 8 Gen 2. Razr+ only has last year's 8+ Gen 1 but will likely still have the better design and more useful cover display access to every app. The Z Flip 5's folder shape cover display does make it a little ugly.

I fully expect Michael Fisher to be using the Pixel Fold and Razr+ as his daily carries. He's finally leaving Samsung foldables after 3.5 years using them exclusively. But who knows? He may still stick to Samsung if he prefers their UI, design, DEX, cameras, or if wants 8 Gen 2, Samsung seems to be offering more of the same with their Z Fold 5 and who knows if the cover display on their Z Flip 5 is any useful?

I'm more interested in getting a book-style foldable this time. I'm thinking of getting the first gen Oppo Find N because it's $300 cheaper and has wireless charging the N2 doesn't have. I'm also enjoying using slabs again. I'm very open for another Xperia Compact in a slab form factor like the XZ1 Compact from 2017. Finally another compact Android slab that can compete with the iPhone 13 mini.

I would be very surprised if not getting a Pro-i ii last year led to the development and planning of this.

The only reason I can think of for not getting the cover screen is Sony implementing it with a case for the device. Not practical but Sony never does what the others do anyway.

As others have said, I'd be afraid of the cost for this. This would probably have to come with the 7+ Gen 2 and what looks like dual cam just to keep the cost down to Xperia 5 levels of pricing.

Looks like what the new Razr should've been.

Legion and blackshark will never have new editions.

Why would sony spend money on new Play2? Also, with same design, phone would be too heavy and thick. Something in Japan not welcome.

Very disappointing... But I don't blame them, these kind of foldables seem to be very popular because they're trendy and fashionable.

It seems the closest we're gonna get to a true Xperia Compact is the NW-A300 series walkman which isn't even a phone... Very sad to say the least.

It's interesting, this is for me if they make it with over 4000mah big battery.
For the current foldable clamshell market, batteries are a joke.

we all r miss Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot & WalkMaN

I read this rumor a few days ago and I've been wanting Sony to release a foldable flip phone for a while now. Clamshells were popular in Japan for several years after the first iPhone was released. No cover display is a letdown. I expect in future versions that they will include it.

The most popular foldables in the world have been the Z Flips. The Flip 3 and 4 outsold their Fold 3 and 4 counterparts like 2:1. The Z Folds are still too expensive for most people. It's good to see more competition in the foldable clamshell space. Now if Sony can finally give us a successor to their Xperia Play and PS Vita.
