It offers more controls and better external flash support/compatibility. You have enough room to learn and improve without having to buy a better camera.
The smaller size and still decent grip is ideal for street photography. Many older EF(S) lenses (used or new) can be used with the reduction ring. It works great. Especially the 10-18 stm, 18-135 stm/usm, 55-250 stm, 24 stm and 50 usm lenses offer a decent price/performance ratio. RF lenses are a bit more expensive.

Looking to buy my first "grownup" camera. Everyone commenting seems pretty down on the R100 so I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a better first-time camera.

                - Would love to spend less than $600 although I have some room there.
                - Primarily plan to use it for portraits and "boudoir" photography but also travel & street photography.
                - In terms of form factor, I care less about portability and more about something that's ergonomic and easy to hold steady. That said, my hands are on the smaller side for an adult man.
                - I don't care at all about video. Chances are I will never use it.

                Thanks in advance!

With price under 1500 one individual can buy both devices.
Both devices are worth way more than just one phone for same price like case of S23 Ultra or Fold, Apple 14 pro or 14 Pro Max, latest Sony etc.

                      Now you got it please???

you have to suffer, 25 May 2023so $1080 in total for the body and the lens kit??Nah, 600 for the body and lens, at least thats the starting point.

e-waste. content mostly consumed on smartphone displays, no need for high res photos. aside from that, a $600 smartphone will beat this on video.

so $1080 in total for the body and the lens kit??

EVF is way more used, screen is more to navigate menus not to look at frame

This product doesn't make a lot of sense given that Canon lenses are quite expensive and there exist no cheaper 3rd party alternatives to begin with - Better to spend a bit more on the body and get R10 instead, or even R7 if you want a body + lens hybrid stabilisation.

Also, a mere 3.5fps AF-enabled continuous shooting (WTF?) and the lack of a touchscreen are very questionable even considering the price, given that Canon is aiming at smartphone users with this camera - Hard pass.

"The EOS R100 supports the EOS R mount, which is still relatively new and has very expensive lens selection, many of which cost more than the camera"

Just for clarity, the mount is called RF and it's been around for five years. I think, the whole purpose of this "budget" APS camera is to offer a base model able to use the lenses made for full frame sensors, without an adapter. Those lenses are crazy expensive, if you want them with Canon branding. You can get third party prime lenses, that often offers better specs, at the cost of losing zoom.

Does it really make sense over the cheaper EOS M50 models? Whelp, you can put an mount adapter on those and get access to lenses made for their full frame DSLR models, which I think makes a bit more sense as a "first buy" system camera. Those DSLR lenses are as expensive as their mirrorless dittos.

Only in wide landscape photography I don't see much of a reason to not use a smartphone. But in any other scene I do. Portraits sport closeups nature and more. I got the 55-250mm ef-s from canon and I can take a 17x zoom compared to a phone and it is crystal clear high resolution and more. All that in a 2015 entry level DSLR.
