However, the sensor on a ILC (interchangeable lens camera) is bigger by far from any smartphone camera sensor. So, technically this should get you more detailed results, especially if you combine it with some good lenses. Keep in mind, though, that this particular Canon R100 isn't really targeted as a 'photo' or 'landscape' camera. It's more of a vlogging camera, even if the specs kind of suck. So I would suggest you look at other options

Is this any better than Pixel 7A or Galaxy S23?
I mean, the R100 should have better optics, even the cheapest kit, but are photos better than those from a 500-650€ smartphone?

Yet what they offer are crappy cameras with a low price. They think that the low price will attract customers. High-end cameras are too much and too professional with eye-watering prices....entry-level compact, vlogging-friendly cameras aren't practical or feature-packed enough.... although there are some good ones out there...take the just launched Fujifilm X-S20. Strong video options with vlogging friendly LCD. Or Sony's ZV-E1. 4K/60p with no crop, IBIS and same sensor as the high-end A7S III. You pay a substantially higher price, of course. But it's just worth it for what you get compared to the R100 or Nikon Z30 or Sony ZV-1....

Best phone on the market and super B camera.
Companies like Samsung, Sony, Apple with much more expensive devices cant compete.

R100 is now the only other crop sensor camera in the series.

What about R7 and R10? They are both crop sensors as well.

Looks like Canon is trying to grab more unsuspecting cosumers and lock them into their expensive lenses. I can see this camera being pushed with discounts at electronics stores where the salesmen will say "YOU CANT GO WRONG WITH CANON, AND ITS A STEAL AT THIS PRICE". But it might backfire in the long run, one people realise they have been done.

Traditional camera industry either need to go ultra high end niche or disappear completely. What is this, a Canon 450D from 2008 all over again?
500$ for a body that virtually cannot do anything, without a lens. And a good ones are expensive and heavy, not practical and not fun to use.
And with a cheap dark kit lens the different in IQ will be indistinguishable from 2019 Redmi Note.
Japanese people are funny. They definitely need a reality check. Straight and harsh.

Don't understand the strategy of Canon....they released the already not-so-great R50 back in February. The differences between the R50 and R100 are:

•R100 has an older 24MP sensor used in M50 Mark II paired with older processor
                        R50 Win

•R100 has a more limited ISO range and with an older sensor and processor, it will of course perform worse at higher ISOs than R50
                        R50 Win

•4K video is only available at 24p on the R100 with a 1.55x crop, so better off with 1080p. Also, recording time is limited at 30 mins compared to the 1 hour of the R50
                        R50 win

•R100 autofocus system is contrast based, which is much less reliable than phase-detect AF (though it is expected at this price). Autofocus is much less sophisticated compared to the R50 as well.
                        R50 Win

•R50 shoots at up to 15fps with AF/AE in silent electronic shutter, while the R100 at 6.5fps without AF/AE
                        R50 Win

•Both cameras have the same 2.36M dot viewfinder, but R50 has an 120fps refresh rate, while R100 has 60fps
                        R50 Win

•R100's LCD screen is also lower res and fixed compared to the R50's. The R100's screen also doesn't have touchscreen
                        R50 Win

So why buy the R100 at $500 when the R50, a much more capable camera, is only at $600-$700? The R50 is a much better deal

Do you know the aps-c sensor size of canon cameras is actually smaller than the original aps-c sensor size of what Nikon, Sony and other camera makers use ? I think this small size actually reduces the picture quality 🤔 . What do you think ?

"Being targeted at first time camera buyers or those upgrading from a smartphone.." Dear Canon, if you aiming for smartphone users please give better and bigger screen that smartphone users already used to such as AMOLED display and it must be TOUCHSCREEN. This is basically reskinned M series /1xxxD series. Goodluck with that.

Yes, the hardware and software parts are outdated but It will still be better than any mobile cameras. This product is aimed at drawing attention from camera nerds, who only had experienced phone cameras. For professionals this camera cannot offer anything valuable and interesting but again it is only 480$.

This is so stupid considering they are trying to attract smartphone users.

Just an old style mirrorless with crap kit lens to trick gullible people spending money as if their photos suddenly will look better.
