Kangal, 29 May 2023Still, you've proven my point correct. You can see th... moreI don't consider that the 3DS was very successful. It was a success, but it is the worst-selling Nintendo handheld console. The main problem of the 3DS is that only a handful of games use stereoscopic 3D in a meaningful way. So the 3DS is mostly just a more powerful DS. As for the Switch, it's the most powerful handheld console ever made. It has been 6 years since it was released, so obviously new handheld PCs will be much more powerful than the Switch. Speaking of, if a successor of the Switch is just a more powerful version of the Switch, it'll most likely sell much worse than the Switch.

You can see the information he linked (sorry I mean quoted) in his comment, just as I was saying. Which was my point initially, if you scroll up and read my comment. You're not hear to argue in good-faith and help the conversation forward. You are just here to attack others personally and make yourself feel good. If you're done with that part, perhaps you'd want to get back on topic:

Going back further, the "numbers I made up" was a comprehensive list of handhelds released from the 1980s until now. It also included the general performance of Home Console in their relative era. Basically things rounded up/rounded down. It's not perfect (on purpose) to be exhaustive and show as many handhelds as possible and as many Home Consoles as possible. I can fix it up, but it will definitely be a worse list for the point intended. Regardless, the point I was making, if you want to stay on-topic, is that Nintendo's hardware has always been slow for handhelds. Inspite of that, they've been very successful with each product (GB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, NSwitch).

Is this relevant to this topic?
Yes by adjacent, to show there is a market segment for Project-Q. And that performance or functionality does not dictate "sales success" or "total profits". However, we have to understand that "sales" alone doesn't dictate "success" because that depends on the things you measure.... as an analogy it's like saying The Big Mac is the best hamburger in the world because more people choose to buy it. Quantity does not dictate Quality. Or the Nintendo Wii wasn't a good Home Console despite it selling over 100 Million units. Sony may sell 150 Million units of the Project-Q handheld but that doesn't mean it was a great product, it merely means it was popular.

About 70% of Switch users use their Switch consoles mainly in TV mode or use them as hybrid consoles meaning they use both TV mode and handheld mode. About 30% of Switch users mainly use handheld mode. The sales are also consistent with this information. The Switch plus the Switch OLED sell better than the Switch Lite by a huge margin: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2023/230509_3e.pdf By the way, the Switch is more powerful in TV mode. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, for example, runs in 1080p60 in TV mode. It's a true hybrid console.

The NSwitch is a handheld console that CAN be docked. The PSP had a similar functionality baked in. Whilst the PS Vita could stream to the handheld, or be docked in the form of the PS TV dongle. Majority of NSwitch users don't use the dock, apparently it's used in handheld mode the most common, and mostly around the house/indoors connected to the Wifi. That's drastically different to the outdoor usage from their pocketable devices: new3DS, 3DS, DS Lite, GBA etc etc.

Another logic behind this reasoning is to compare the performance of the NSwitch in terms of being a handheld and being a Home Console. It's not 50/50. The performance is skewed much more heavily towards it being a handheld than a Home Console.

A true hybrid would be something closer to the likes of the ASUS ROG Ally Pro, with the XG-Mobile Dock. Not that I'm calling that a "console" no that's definitely a "PC". But the concept of it, it's a handheld that uses it's iGPU gets underclocked to 13W when portable, and switches to eGPU whilst its overclocked to 45W when docked. A true hybrid.

Meanwhile the WiiU is a Home Console that CAN go portable. It's the polar opposite. And this Sony Project-Q is the same concept.

Attacking only for trivial inaccuracies, sometimes which are done on purpose to better communicate with the layman. That false sense of superiority, you can have it, and live in your shallow world. The rest of us will continue to converse on topics we find interesting, and albeit imperfect, we will grow by sharing insights, postulations and knowledge.

Vegetaholic, 27 May 2023Except they are, and it basically kills any Nintendo chance... moreYou miss the whole point of the Switch being a hybrid console. It's not just a handheld console. If you have ever used a Switch, you'll understand this simple fact and understand how it's distinctly different from a handheld console. When you dock it, the Switch's screen is automatically turned off and the image immediately appears on the TV. You don't need to connect any cable. You just put the Switch on the dock, and that's it. It's seamless and very convenient. Then you detach the Joy-Con controllers and put them on the Joy-Con Grip and then you can use TV mode. You don't need to buy a separate controller and a dock to use TV mode. None of other devices can do this. That's unfortunate for consumers.

I know that the Steam Deck isn't a console, but if you consider it a console, it's a complete failure in terms of sales. The Asus ROG Ally will probably do somewhat better, but it'll also probably fail if you consider it a console. Nintendo demonstrated since 2017 that people want a hybrid console, but these companies don't get it or don't want to compete with Nintendo.
