Samsung is working on a fix for blurry photos from the Galaxy S23 and S23+

02 June 2023
This issue came to be known as the "banana blur" due to its shape. A software fix promises to resolve it, in the mean time here are a couple of ways to avoid it.

Hi, i have bought S23 15 days back and have no idea on this banana blur issue before purchase. In initial days i ignore this considering i sm new to samsung family and i am using camera module wrongly. But after 15 days, i start feeling annoying with picture quality. I started searching on google for the solution. No solution available. I visited service center of Samsung in India. They are hearing this banana blur term first time. They told no such issue reported to us for s23.

I want to say issue is still there and for this high priced flagship phone Samsung should support there customers. Otherwise it will be difficult for us to use Samsung's phone in coming future anymore.

Pooooorest Quality seen from big brand like Samsung.

I found an work around to take A4 size document by using 1.0x camera without blur on whole page. Use manual focus, tap the focus point at the center of banana gate area, then shoot the photo. For example when you take picture by vertical, the manual focus point will be the left side of center.

I have had an issue with blur when zoomed in to 3.0 or greater; a firm tap restores focus. This is annoying in photo mode and makes video zoom footage unusable. Camera was replaced on the first return, issue remained albeit with not as firm a tap required to bring into focus, and the issue occurring only 60% of the time (vs 100% initially). Another two returns and I've received a new S23 - which has exactly the same problem. I'll be returning it too... a quick google doesn't bring up this particular issue, so maybe 3 cameras with the same problem has just been very bad luck.

People buying mobiles or any gadget to impress others or show off instead of just for themselves and its usefulness is really sad. It's similar to those Billionaires who wear unbranded and simple clothes (because it comfortable) vs those who buy the latest hyped clothing and shoes because its popular. I buy what I buy because its useful and its what I need/want not to impress or worry about what others think.

They will probably fix the text only with the AI as it will be relatively simple and this is the scenario where this hardware issue is the most visible. Text is easily recognizable by modern AI algorithms and therefore - it will be easy to mitigate the problem by a software AI trick. We will have sharp text photos, wow, such an achievement in 1000 USD phone.

However, the defect will still be there because it's a HARDWARE problem and eg. be still visible on any eg. landscape shot. Platns, leaves and perhaps even faces that are in the "banana area" will most probably be still out of focus as AI will most likely not be able to correct this.

Good for those buying cheaper phones bcos people might mistaken them as using a flagship. I wonder how a $800 S23 user would feel if people think he is using a $200 A14...

So they never fixed the blurry photo problem it seems. They're to proud to admit that it's a hardware problem and not software. I thought that they fixed it once and for all with S23 Ultra but no. I have the same problem with S21 Ultra and they never fixed it.

mawlki, 02 Jun 2023Mm returned an S22 with unsharp area between edges and cent... moreWhat is scary is that the S22 had the same defect, and nevertheless they chose to use the same lens in S23... hope they will make better lens in S24. The S20 used dual aperture camera that will prevent such defect.

And the actuall truth is, the pictures are not real anymore, but AI garbage, as all "smartphones" this days do, that will never compare with nokia 808 or 1020... That's the truth. You had no HDR, but you had real pics, with great quality and realistic colors, not the garbage this days that people call great.

Its an hardware problem but yes people are happy because samsung gives plenty of OS and security updates.
Now would like to see how they going to update hardware issue with software.
Maybe if they shut that camera for good will fix.
Because reccaling like in case of Note 7 will solve nothing it will be way more costly than if samsung refunds every customer with this issue.
Words are spoken but people still eats a very dry bread.

how typical of samsung and embarrassing

It is noticeably seen when taking pictures of text or documents, the blur is not like true bokeh effect (blur is more seen in periphery area/edges of a photo), but in areas of the upper side of the main lens, near the Ultrawide unit (whatever the position, portrait or landscape).

for the time being whenever I take photos of documents, i use the 2x zoom (to get an adequate distance from object). Can be hardware fault or software fault (when text mode is active)

It's so disappointing that Samsung made A Series(300$) like S23 Series(1000$).It's very difficult to recognize them.
