This silly naming scheme comes from the fact that Sony decided to use the names Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 instead of names like Xperia Pro and Xperia.

Anonymous, 11 Jun 2023You don't understand, the lens is a circle, so if you ... moreThere's no reason to treat this orthodox 3:2 sensor as a multi-aspect one when putting the entire sensor under an image circle of a ~19mm equivalent UWA lens like Sharp did would achieve exactly the same effect, except you would get even more effective EIS because there would be simply more pixels available wiggle around the frame when recording a video "standard" 24mm wide angle FoV.
My complaint with Xperia Pro-I has always been that a very large portion of its sensor remains unused and its product page is deliberately made ambiguous about that particular fact, anyway. Had they been more straightforward about the actual area of the sensor being used instead of simply describing it as a "1.0-type image sensor camera", I wouldn't have considered it a problem. I saw some people making a tame excuse for them like "Well TECHNICALLY they are not lying about PUTTING a type 1 sensor on a phone, they never promised you anything about how they would actually UTILISE it", well, that just wouldn't cut it.
"they did mention that they wanted to keep their devices slim and light"
I see, so Sony is prioritising form over function when it comes to designing their smartphones, then. It makes sense because Sony is using Xperia as a companion/gateway for their more expensive professional-grade equipment.

Nick Tegrataker, 09 Jun 2023"crop allows pro-i to keep same FOV while going from 4... moreYou don't understand, the lens is a circle, so if you use a bigger sensor than the lens coverage area, you'll be able to crop differently between 4:3 and 16:9, giving you more flexibility. Read about how multi aspect ratio sensors work, it's the same exact principal as joe the IMX400 in the XZ Premium worked. For example a normal 4:3 sensor cropped to 16:9 will look exactly the same as if you crop in post, but not when you use a multi aspect ratio sensor.
"Sony would be the last company to care about design over functionality and features"
Except they do. In those official xperia videos, they did mention that they wanted to keep their devices slim and light, which is exactly why they have used a dual layer stacked sensor on the Xperia 1 V. It gives a performance of a 1 inch sensor in a 1/1.3 package.

It's been 13 years some people said Sony will close down Xperia and 13 years later, there are still here. Both the Alpha and Sony Group as a whole still need Xperia as their portfolio, telecommunications interconnection internally, and ecosystem integration of Sony portofolio, even if it results loss of profit and market share (the latter, they really didn't care like they did back before 2019. They view Xperia as their transferring tech project to smaller scale, both literally and figuratively).

Anonymous, 10 Jun 2023I heard rumours sony will stop making phones next year.If Sony Alpha needs the Xperia division for the purposes of trickling down their Alpha technology to be implemented in smartphones and as external monitors and device companion devices for their Alpha camera, regardless of whether Xperia is gaining profits or losing money, I think Sony won't shut down its smartphone division. Sony has turned Xperia to a project-based division since 2019 if you see the patterns going on. This is not the biggest reason, mind you. In past interviews about why Sony still insists on keeping the Xperia around, the biggest reason wasn't camera-related but telecommunication-related. Sony still needs Xperia for telecommunications tech for their other divisions in the future, especially since IoT is basically everywhere now.

Anonymous, 10 Jun 2023Do you also love the short update commitment they offer? Two OS update is still more than enough for most people, especially when they bought phones through carrier and it never goes beyond two year contract.
