Manufacturers who produce highly capable phones with small screens risk facing class action lawsuits if enough owners suffer from eye problems and other health issues. Manufacturers conduct regular market studies. No manufacturer can resist an unattended niche market if it truly exists. In this case, they don't see the market (even Apple who once resisted increasing screen size has recognized this). Small screens are for feature phones - more powerful smartphones which people stare at more often and typically while in motion (walking or riding) require larger screens. Manufacturers also recognize the pocket- and grip- problems, and are striving to develop thinner phones, and phones with alternative technologies such as folding-, flexible-, dual-screens, even projection screens. Due to finer technologies and thinner bodies, a 4" touchscreen phone today has roughly the same mass as a regular "cellular" phone in the 90s (Nokia 2110, older Motorolas) which we used to pocket everyday.

X, 22 Apr 2013Take the iPhone 5. At 4.1", the screen is 640p. That s... moreWell, although 4K screens r utterly useless n redundant on a smartphone (many would say even 1080p screens r useless 4 phones), I'm pretty sure we'll be seeing 'em soon within d nxt 2 yrs or so as bigger n higher resolution screens seem 2 b d biggest bragging ri8s among companies these days! However, I really really hope that by d time v do get 4K "phones" with screen sizes north of 7'' possibly, these devices become fully flexible so it won't b that big a hassle 2 use or carry 'em around! Increasing d screen sizes any further would only make any rational sense, if d devices can be made flexible n convenient 2 use/carry n of course that would give rise 2 very novel n unique form factors, designs n shapes! Also, I believe by 2020 most smartphones would evolve in2 wearable computing devices! However, at present these devices challenge the very definition n purposes of mobility!

AnonD-73765, 22 Apr 2013Well, pretty soon this trend is gonna stop n even if it doe... moreTake the iPhone 5. At 4.1", the screen is 640p. That shows that if you want a 720p, only a 4.3" screen is feasible. On Android camp, you have such phones, I believe. Why they don't sale better if there is so much request for them? I think that for the moment, 5" phones will be the maximum, for the high end ones, at 1080p, and their size will go lower with the increase in dpi. I don't think there will be 4K screens on the phones very soon.

Unfortunately, there is really no way for the manufacturers to develop, produce, and sell smaller devices with top-of-the-line specs without compromising their ability to still release phones that are as big as or bigger than the current flagships.
As it is, companies like Samsung and HTC can barely buy up/produce enough hardware to power their flagships. Release dates get pushed back due to insufficient availability of device units. Same model devices are sold with different SoCs in different regions of the worlds. And ex-flagships that are not even a year and a half old are denied software updates because the manufacturers already have their hands full updating the latest models.
Don't forget that a device whose internals aren't "top-of-the-line" isn't automatically a bad device. If the relatively smaller devices came with hardware that was woefully inadequate then yes, a plea might be made. But the fact of the matter is that the hardware is still more than sufficient, even if it's not the best. iPhones don't have the same processing power that the latest Droids have. Does that make the iPhone inadequate?
Heck, is the QWERTY keyboard layout even designed to be used with one hand?
Once upon a time, I thought that I would never use a device with a screen whose diagonal size exceeded 4.3". Eventually, I bought a Note 2 and I'm pretty damn pleased with it. What's more, my old Sensation XE and my girlfriend's GS2 started feeling absolutely tiny (and their screen sizes inadequate) in my hands. I can use my Note 2 with one hand easily if I switch to the 4x3 keypad. And by the same token, I hated using just one hand with my Sensation XE when using QWERTY.

X, 22 Apr 2013At 7mm thick and 5" IN DIAGONAL(approx 4" in len... moreWell, pretty soon this trend is gonna stop n even if it doesn't reverse d screen sizes would stay stable as most people'll start realizing that it isn't trendy 2 b carryng a small table or TV in your pockets 2 make calls, listen 2 music, watch vids, browse, play etc. By continually increasing d sizes of phones, companies r ac2ly diminishing d market 4 their own tablets n slates! What's d point of makin tablets if d distinction betwn. tabs, phabs n phones blurs out? Also, what's d point of making "mobile" devices which are not at all mobile or handy? At any rate, this insane trend's gotta stop soon! Give us more storage, longer lasting (not necessarily bulkier) batteries, newer technologies which really wow buyers, not jst bigger screens, faster processor n more RAM!

Anonymous, 22 Apr 2013How did Mae West (almost) put it: "Is that a Galaxy S4... moreAt 7mm thick and 5" IN DIAGONAL(approx 4" in length), a SGS 3/4 is barely visible in your pants pocket. If you wear Bermudas or sky pants, or you wear it in an jacket inside pocket, etc, it's invisible. I think 4.3" screen diagonal phones are easy to use even for the smallest people. So this petition makes no sense.

Let's do our eyes a favor.
Use a proper sized pocket computer (smartphone). "Phone" is a misnomer.
Keep a regular sized feature phone for calls and texting.

The need for larger screen is justified. With more capabilities, our eyes stare longer and more frequently on our phone screens today than in previous generations. Small screens may cause health issues. We don't need smaller screens. What we need are more innovations to make smartphones pocket friendly. There are foldable screens, dual screens, mini projector screens, flexible screens, etc. being developed as we speak. Before, Apple stayed stuck with 3.5" arguing that's all we need. Even they realized we need more screen real estate, hence, the 4" iPhone 5.
