2MP macro modules are almost universally hated, but how do you feel about shooting macro photos with a phone's ultra wide camera?

Chaos X 1982, 27 Jun 2023Ultra Wide is very useful on phone for taking group photos. How are you taking macro group photos?

Who on Earth in their right mind uses wide angle for macro?
UWA+Wide Main Camera+at least 2x Tele, 3.5~5x preferred should be the basic.
And if we want Macro the obvious is to improve the Tele's AF so it can be used as Macro.
      Most macros are 45~120mm anyway.

None of the poll options are correct. Using a mobile for macro photography you should try a short telephoto like 3x. Ultra-wide and dedicated macro on a phone are both pointless.
Make the wide and telephoto cameras better.

Am using the Honor Magic 5 Pro. All 3 cameras take really nice macro shots. Sometimes a bit too much details that it looks kinda odd (ie. The micro scratches on a metal spoon up close) Not sure which is meant to be the correct lens for macro shots though.

Using a telephoto camera for macro shots makes way more sense, try photographing a bug on a flower by coming in at a centimeter distance from him, it'll never happen

Telephoto, it's not a debate. When doing macro, you need some FL to put distance for lighting , and much easier framing. Macro UWA were the specialist of specialist lenses dedicated to only a very minor niche of photography, they were fewer in number than fisheye. Now they're omnipresent simply because they're simpler to implement in a smartphone, not because of usability. As for the 2MP crap, I suppose they have their place if they're truly cheap enough to cut costs such that they add macro where there is none, like 720P webcams.

Marco M, 26 Jun 2023I have dedicated macro on mine, a 5MP one, but wouldn'... moreThese 5MP Macro cameras are so terrible. I prefer the ultra-wide replacement almost always. The shots in this article are very poorly done, no offence to GSMA.

I'll never go back o using a low resolution Macro camera, as every shot looks like garbage due to resolution. It really is a night and day comparison,. You should try one out!

Useless 2 Mpix macro cams should be banned to be honest.
I do believe macro photos are usefull for certain people but 2mpix macro cam on a 500+ eur phone is like 6th tyre on a car and i really thing one spare tyre is good enough.

AlienKiss , 26 Jun 2023It's like comparing a toy car to a real car. Yeah, the... moreThere are phones with decent macro modules, but not the ultrawide/macro ones and not the budget 2MP ones, though even they would outperfom the iphone here. Much better for those shots to just take a normal photo with the main module and crop, or tele, because those "macro" shots were awful.

I have dedicated macro on mine, a 5MP one, but wouldn't mind if a decent ultrawide could replace it. If.

Calling the sample photos from the iphone 14 pro max macro seems like a bit of an insult. They're just blurry and messy somewhat close-ups. And fairly useless for anything other than promoting separate macro modules. The Xiaomi did a lot better, but I'm still not sold.

Then again I really like taking almost microscope like macro shots.

It's like comparing a toy car to a real car. Yeah, they both have wheels but only one of them is actually usable. The same thing applies here. You will never have true macro photos using today's smartphones, no matter how hard they try. It's physically impossible. You need the lenses and the distance between them to actually take REAL macro photos.

Funny of you to imply I take any photos at all xDDD

Wouldn't mind if they up the resolution and slapped the macro in the ultrawide. I am a casual user of macro mode.

I know that macro cameras are sometimes useless, because sometimes you get a better pic by just cropping the main 48/64/108MP sensor's image.

I for one, don't use much macro anyways, neither on phone, nor my DSLR.

As for "macro enabled ultra wide cameras", I'm sorry I haven't used them. So, not entering this poll.
Although I still support the idea of one of the other cameras doing macro, not an isolated 2 MP one.

I think incorporating macro into the telephoto lens would be the better option. With that being said I would rather use a macro lens and camera for macro shots.

Anton-, 25 Jun 2023You buy a real camera and stop fooling around! The cameras ... moreYeah. Pay for a 200mp phone and use it like a 5/8/12 mp one since it doesn't have expandable storage and the photo is gimped anyways. You cloud storage guys are amazing.

Aside from main camera, Ultrawide comes second on my actual usage, I use my phone as Dash Camera and my Ultrawide is the best for it. If the Ultrawide can be used as Macro then it would be so much better. 13MP Ultrawide that can do 13MP Macro? I'd prefer that more than 2MP and 5MP dedicated Macro. My main hobby is electronics and my Ultrawide Macro can takes way better pictures of chips and motherboards.
