Weekly poll results: Macro-enabled ultra wide cameras see lots of love

02 July 2023
People have found lots of interesting things to photograph in macro mode, but not everyone has a phone that can do a good job of it.

rosesarerosie, 02 Jul 2023Explain whyThe smaller the sensor is, the larger depth of field is in focus. UWA or selfie cameras are tiny, so in fact all the image would be focused and the object does not stand out in it. That's why companies introduced macro modes and portrait modes with artificial blur.

I use the macro a lot for work. I need to take photos of product defects. I also have a sony a7R iv with a macro lens and also a 60x microscope. Its just convenient to use the phone macro for simple tasks.
I would love a phone with a higher resolution macro lens.
But still mine is an uncommon use case scenario so i understand that the macro lens is useless for most people.

UWA "macro" is really the worst solution. If you want to do a proper macro photography, you usually use a lens with longer focal lenght, because with ultra wide you cast shade on the object. The same is when photographing with your phone.
Not to mention that phone cameras simply don't do macro.

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2023Digital zoom will never replace properly another focal leng... moreWell, that's the point.
If we say the Ultra-Wide is a x1 zoom (ie No Zoom), then the regular Wide-angle shot feels like a x2 zoom. Then we have this Wide-angle is able to use pixel binning to get a very high-quality photo with half the pixels. So it would feel like a x4 zoom. This could be useful to many regular people. But for anything substantial, you need to shift away from digital zoom to optical zoom, and that's where the periscope comes in. Now if we baseline the Ultra-Wide as a x1 level zoom (takes a crowd photo), Wide-Angle at x2 level zoom (crops half members off, looks like three people instead of 6), Digital Telephoto at x4 level zoom (brings a single subject into frame), then our Narrow-Angle or Periscope camera would be optically using around a x20 level of zoom (looks past the subject to a small object behind in the distance).
