I don't see how that is cherry picking. Most game companies don't disclose sales by platform. Again, no, the Switch isn't only a handheld console. It's a hybrid console. The Switch Lite is a handheld console, and it's the worst-selling version of the Switch. The Switch and Switch OLED outsold the Switch Lite by a huge margin. https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2023/230509_3e.pdf

As for the Switch/Nintendo exclusive game sales, the top 10 Switch games sold over 280 million units.

    - Nintendo Switch exclusives, and how many titles they sold and how much money spent
    - PS4 exclusives, how many sold, what money was made
    - XB1 exclusives, how many sold, what money was made
    - Cross-platform between PS4 and XB1
    - Cross-platform between NSwitch and XB1
    - Cross-platform between NSwitch and PS4
    - Cross-platform between NSwitch, PS4, and XB1

...those facts will tell the whole story. And they will refute or confirm the assertion that was made, which is that Nintendo isn't in the console market, they are not competing with rivals, and the NSwitch is mostly aligned as being a Handheld Console (ie new3DS XL successor). The handheld market is very different to the Home Console market.

If you're interested, we can do the same exercise between each generations. The turning point in my view was the Wii, since the GameCube was more of a traditional competitor like the SNES. Whereas the WiiU did have a brief moment of competing against the PS3 and Xbox 360 when it came to time in the market and the games they supported. In my view, had Nintendo skipped the Wii (Late 2006) and instead released the WiiU before 2008, their market strategy would be very different (less reliance on exclusives).

Also, the Switch is a hybrid console. It's both a home console and a handheld console.

Kangal, 04 Jul 2023Best selling console: is the PS2 (160 Million), then PS4 (... moreHandheld consoles are consoles. In console world, sales about 20 million units and lower are failures. The GameCube is one of the biggest failures of Nintendo. As for competition, you don't look at the big picture. You should try to see beyond hardware specs. Many games that released on multiple platforms sold the best on the Switch. The Switch definitely competes with other consoles in terms of software sales. For example, sales of the Switch version of Minecraft are 4 times of those on the Xbox and 2 times of those on the PlayStation. https://www.tweaktown.com/news/92143/minecraft-makes-4x-more-revenue-on-switch-than-xbox/index.html

By the way, the software sales of the Switch are over 1 billion units.

Anonymous, 03 Jul 2023It's silly to ask Nintendo to compete when the Switch ... moreBest selling console:
          is the PS2 (160 Million), then PS4 (120 M), then PS1 (103 M), then Wii (100 M), then PS3 (88 M), then Xbox 360 (84 M), then NES (62 M), then XB1 (58 M), then SNES (49 M), then N64 (33 M), then MegaDrive (31 M), then Atari 2600 (29 M), then Xbox (24 M), then GameCube (22 M), then Sega Master (18 M), then WiiU (14 M), then Tgfx16 (11 M), then Sega Saturn (10 M), then Dreamcast (9 M). Anything beyond 50M sales seems like a healthy success, hitting only 20M sales seems like a success, and anything below 10M seems like definite failure.

          Meanwhile, the best selling handheld:
          is the NDS (154 M), NSwitch (126 M), then Gameboy (119 M), then PSP (82 M), then GBA (81 M), then 3DS (76 M), then Game&Watch (43 M), then PS Vita (13 M), then GameGear (11 M), then WonderSwan (4 M), then nGage (3 M). Anything beyond 80M sales seems like a healthy success, hitting only 30M sales seems like a success, and anything below 15M seems like definite failure.

...Nintendo is merely competing against Nintendo at this point. Meanwhile Xbox is competing against PlayStation on the console front, and Valve on the PC front. The likes of PS and Xbox will probably enter the handheld market soon, via the competition of Cloud Streaming, but this would be parallel to Nintendo and not as a direct competitor.

No, the Switch is clearly an evolution of the Wii U if you think about it. The Wii U is similar to a hybrid console. You can play Wii U games in handheld mode. However, the Wii U GamePad must be close to the console. The Switch is like a Wii U GamePad with detachable controllers and with an SoC in it.

I wasn't defending any console. I was defending the consumer, they should have more competition, more choices, higher quality, and better value. You are deluded if you think having one dominate makes it better for others. I just want Nintendo to stop jer king around, and actually compete. The NSwitch is closer to the performance of the Xbox 360 than it is to the XB1. Now specs alone don't make a game better, or a console good... but it can be the difference of supporting a certain game from developers or not.

It is hard not to notice patterns in console history:
                  PS1 \ N64 \\ Dreamcast
                  PS2 \ GameCube \\ Xbox
                  Wii \\\\\ Xbox 360 \ PS3
                  WiiU \\\\ XB1 \ PS4
                  NSwitch \\\\ PS4 Pro \ XB1X
                  XSS \\ PS5 \ XSX

...one of these manufacturers usually provides faster hardware, one of them usually provides hardware that is more than 1-generation behind, and another manufacturer is fairly competitive. Again, specs don't make the game, but they do enable developers to make it that much easier and higher fidelity.
