Steam Summer Sale slashes Steam Deck price by as much as 20%

02 July 2023
This is the steepest discount we've seen on Valve's handheld yet.

I just had a weird thought, in terms of hardware it's always Nintendo slowest, PlayStation as being fast, and Xbox being even faster. The SteamDeck feels like the PlayStation of handhelds, whilst the even faster ROG Ally is like the Xbox, and the Switch is the slow Nintendo alternative.

I really am not optimistic about the Q4 2024 Nintendo Super-Switch that has been rumoured.
It might be only around the Valve SteamDeck level of performance, which is only inline with last-gen consoles, and simply too slow to support current-gen games. The XSS doesn't have a fast GPU, but the rest of the system are fast enough for at least running the games. We won't be able to say the same thing about the Super-Switch. At least the ASUS ROG Ally Pro is able to match the XSS performance at the higher TDP.

I think we need to concede that Nintendo is no longer competing in the console market, at least not Home Consoles. From the lens of Handheld Consoles, the Super-Switch is probably not too slow, and that applies to the NSwitch as well. Just think of the NSwitch as the direct competitor to the new3DS-XL and not the WiiU.

YUKI93, 02 Jul 2023Why would you want the Steam Deck when the ROG Ally exist? ... moreSteam Deck perform better than Ally at low power, 15W and below. These handheld has 40Whr battery you need to use 10W or low to be able to enjoy longer Game session, with Steam deck you can configure soc to use 3W, 5W etc with 5W you can even play game like a witcher at decent quality and get over 4 hours of gameplay.

In my opinion Deck is practical better than Ally, and its cheaper.

If you want to Dock Ally and use it as Hybrid for Handheld and laptop/Desktop replacement then Ally is better.

You're freely choose whenever you want to download games from Epic Games or even 🏴‍☠️. And yes, speak about 300 things, that's why I've said that Windows is "resource-heavy". I hope Asus can do a partnership with Windows to solve this but looking at Asus' track record as a company that doesn't care much about their software, I'm not really sure.

YUKI93, 02 Jul 2023Why would you want the Steam Deck when the ROG Ally exist? ... moreBecause ally is a joke from a joke meme company. I have thought, that asus can make good software. No. They can't. They can't even check bios before pushing update. After user expiriance with high-end scar laptops i assume that Ally is worse. But i can't imagine how could be something worse than scar laptops. The only thing asus should do - motherboards

Aoi Akane, 02 Jul 2023Linux uses less-resource and more RAM-friendly compared to ... moreNot necessarily. SteamOS on SteamDeck is just dumbed down Linux to a point it can run Steam for Linux and that's about it. Windows doesn't have such edition and is always full fat version with 300 things that you may not even need on SteamDeck. Also Windows has compatibility stuff spanning some 20 years back in time even in latest version. Linux is a lot more finicky about that and something like MacOS even more so. That adds ballast and makes things slower. Windows will run games natively and without any fiddling or issues, especially with anti-cheat protections.

Well i remember my old times in 80-90s era where i litterary born on tetris.
This reminds me of those old times.
Nowdays wouldnt switch my 1790eur gaming laptop Lenovo Legion powered by Ryzen 7 5800H paired with 32GB ram and a Geforce 3070RTX 8G for anything else.

that 64GB version can kill Switch OLED, I want handheld gaming but the Switch and Steam Deck are not officially sold in Indonesia. ROG Ally plans to be sold in Indonesia but this is more expensive.

YUKI93, 02 Jul 2023Why would you want the Steam Deck when the ROG Ally exist? ... moreLinux uses less-resource and more RAM-friendly compared to Windows. First time it just feels weird to see a company puts a literal desktop OS to a handheld PC, but hey, at least we have more game choices (unlike the Steam Deck one where you're stuck with games on Steam Store) since it's Windows after all. Microsoft could even team up with Asus to build their Windows/Xbox games support on Ally, to rival Sony's upcoming semi-handheld's* PlayStation console.

*I said "semi" because it's actually just a projection of the actual PS5, so it can't stand alone, unlike any other handheld consoles.

Anonymous, 02 Jul 2023Still waiting for it to be officially available in my country. Why would you want the Steam Deck when the ROG Ally exist? The only reason you want the Steam Deck is because you are a full-time Linux user. I used to be in the Linux bandwagon before switching to Windows 10 during the Anniversary Update period, and I don't have any moment where I miss going back to Linux as my primary desktop OS at all. Frankly speaking, I never looked back after I made that switch.
