I'm really hoping this fails because if it succeeds, it will chain the Fediverse, a rare bastion of open source communities, to greedy monopolistic corporations that we left in the first place.

Yeah. There's far too many uppity serfs now on twitter not having their opinions silenced for not parroting the "correct" opinions of the establishment.
That's what this is about, celebs and journalists don't like that they're getting called out on their BS on twitter now so they want a mainstream alternative where they can go back to the "glory days" of twitter. Where only the "correct" opinions are allowed

Do you know why I never liked Instagram?
Because when Amber Heard published a photo of herself, others could only like it and they didn't even have the ability to comment! I like YouTube because I can dislike and express my opinion, but not Instagram!

For what it is being used (algorithm-modulated conversation), Twitter is a really bad concept. It's meant to provide short information, and not broad discussions. Instead, we regularly get hating, misinformation, an extremely low signal-to-noise ratio overall. Its algorithms massively facillitate echo-chambers and filter-bubbles - and facebook is not better, it may be even worse with that.
So, instead of being plagued with only one bad concept, "Meta" is now giving the people another bad thing of the same sort.

Don't care, will never use it, going off social media was literally the best decision in my life that I ever made and made me exponentially more happier, would recommend to do the same for everyone

After WhatsApp Policy fiasco, stopped using all Meta owned apps completely and switched to Telegram. Used Twitter for 10 years, but after Elon Musk's taken over, quit that platform also and joined Mastodon. I just can't go back to this again.

Used to be an apparel company called meta threads, but it looks like they chanted their name to dotexe. I imagine meta paid them a lot of money for the name lol

I hate twitter, and I hate facebook. I'll never use this... but that being said, I have to applaud them for picking the best possible time when everyone who does use Twitter is looking to jump ship.
