"A patent troll is a person or company that buys patents solely for enforcement in court against alleged infringers."
They didn't develop anything and are not going to. They just bought some patents to sue big companies in hope of getting more money than they paid for the patent.
There is no stealing done here.

For example, 3g is about talking 100 characters per minute, and the phone able to understand 100 characters per second. 4g is about the new technology that can talk 100000 characters per minute, and the new technology to understand 100000 characters per minute.
You can use the 4G wavelength, but if your phone cannot understand 100000 characters per minute, it's no better than a 3g phone.
Then we talk about the technology to counter corrupted character detection. And correction. And signal interruption. So which of these 4G technologies do you think dropped down from the sky?

Apple was a patent troll. They sued Samsung for a bounce animation when you scroll to the end of a list. Won a billion, but ultimately the patent was found not to be valid.
After that, I think suing apple for anything is fair game.

I don't think that all patents need to be open sourced and free at this time though.

No, they absolutely do not. They are 2 separate companies. HMD doesn't own Nokia, they simply bought the rights to sell phones under the Nokia name, since Nokia Corporation isn't interested in making phones anymore. I'm speachless, that I'm actually starting to think some people are never going to understand how a license agreement works.

They should make all of this open source and put VESA or JEDEC or some kind of standards agency in charge. If every country has the same cellular frequencies and bands, then connection for people travelling or permanently moving from one country to another won't have terrible connection, and will allow for more connection standards to be made. HMD (the people who nowadays own Nokia) survives entirely on 3G, 4G and 5G patents, while contributing nothing even remotely useful to society. It's just a long-distance radio signal. There is nothing remotely inventive or really different about them. All of this nonsense patenting of 4G and 5G signals only hurts the customer by making modems more expensive and allowing for phone manufacturers to pass on the cost onto consumers. It hurts customers especially on the low-end market.

Apple gets caught not paying royalties to use a particular 4G technology that has been patented through patent-trolling. 😱😱😱 Who cares? I just wish governments finally banned software and hardware patents, because it helps no one. It just completely stifles innovation by allowing non-innovative patents that limit other inventions to be made.
