I just want 2X telephoto back. I love portrait photos, but the 3x used in recent telephotos is too tele. 2X was the sweet spot.

I don't buy Apple iphones due to the high brand tax, but I commend them for their software implementations in their camera app. The quick transition of their video from one optical zoom level to another while retaining almost the same video settings is top notch. If this is what it takes for Android manufacturers to really up their game in video quality, then I'll be watching.

S21 ultra's 10x telephoto has equivalent 240mm FL (focal length). The key thing here is the word "equivalent", the actual FL is about 31mm. Assuming same sensor is used, a 300mm equivalent FL means about 39mm actual FL. This is only 8mm more, so won't require any significant engineering feat. Also, if the sensor size is reduced, then same FL will produce greater equivalent FL.
I was hoping they would make a telephoto lens with Cassegrain format on phones, like catadioptric lenses for full size cameras. These can produce focal lengths upto 5x the length of whole system. It's extremely challenging to make one small enough for phones, so is maintaining collimation under constant throwing around, but I think it's not impossible. Instead of removing features in the name of innovation, how about do something actually innovative?

chinese flagships with 3.5x optical have better zoom than samsung at any range and in lower light the difference is even bigger since they don't use tiny low res sensors like samsung

Pieces go there and they put it together.
Also periscope used by chinese and samsung are designed by Corephotronics , israeli company that belongs to samsung.
Mi 14 has same of mi 13. The "3x".
Mi 14 Pro has " 5x" from 13 ultra.
14 ultra has " 10x" .
Obviously 10x means smaller sensor than one used for "5x".

iphone will never reach of telephoto x10 optical, that level already excited by samsung older s21 ultra or Huawei p40 pro plus. so i thinks this only rumors
