Most custom rom that based on AOSP like OmniRom, LineageOS, CyanogenMod will show "powered by Android" when turned on the phone. HarmonyOS is bare-bone Android with Huawei framework.

This may be ironic but all Huawei needs to do to get its ecosystem up an running better in the EU for example is make all Honor phones running HMS/AppGallery fully compatible.

As things stand, MagicOS is, to all intents and purposes, really HarmonyOS/EMUI but under a different name.

The problem is that currently, even if you have HMS/AppGallery installed on an Honor phone and login via your HuaweiID, you will still run into issues if it isn't a Huawei phone.

This should not be the case but at the moment it is.

      Don't forget the MatePad 11 (2021).

"Still waiting for global release of HarmonyOS. At the moment, the only device for us outsiders to play with HarmonyOS is the MatePad Pro 12.6 (2021)."

Anonymous, 24 Jul 2023I think you're getting (understandably) confused with ... moreLooks like you're the who is confused. What would you call Mint OS? or Ubuntu OS? An windows base OS or Linux OS that been modified by them? If you labeling those two (Mint and Ubuntu) as they own hand made (like what you're claim for Harmony OS for smartphone) then you definitely confused. 100% Own hand made OS is like iOS, Mac OS (be the old OS and the current OS that base on the mother of all Operating System UNIX) Only then you can call it they own hand made OS. Harmony OS is not one of it. Definitely not. Period.

It is legal for you to take source code from AOSP and label your OS without any Android™ word. And that what was Huawei was claiming, that Harmonyos is totally different than Android™, in which some extent, is true.

It's confusing indeed, since AOSP bears the name "Android" too, though it doesn't belong to Android™ brand.

HarmonyOS is just renamed EMUI which both uses Android as a base OS.

HarmonyOS is actually okay without Google services except for that incapability to access data offline from various apps.

Anonymous, 24 Jul 2023I think you're getting (understandably) confused with ... moreNo, I AM NOT confused about the two concepts.

I am indeed saying that HarmonyOS is a heavily modified AOSP-based project, which is why it's compatible w/ some Android Packages and many of the components, rather than an independent work as they originally advertised( something w/ mixed kernel including a featured micro kernel).

So I mentioned Alibaba's YunOS project. Though Alibaba's project acturally went even further because they rewrote the VM, but still retains the original Dalvik VM from AOSP which provides Android compatibility.

I still don't know what's the purpose of your reply? I am clearly not confused with these two concepts.

AOSP is a free and open source linux based OS designed for smartphones and tablets and effectively anyone can use it freely to build their own operating system with.
Android™ is Google's proprietary version of AOSP that they then build Google Mobile Services into and is what pretty much every android smartphone out there runs some version of (with their own skin on top of).

HarmonyOS uses AOSP, which is why it's compatible with most android apps, but it's not Android™ - which is why it doesn't get to use GMS natively (and subsequently any app that needs GMS to work).

If you change the... moreBut still lighter than all other android releases which is a plus for snappier system experience. However, I don't like how this company treat its users based on their nationality, it's discrimination. And many other Chinese companies also behave like this.

Apple didn't do that, nor Samsung. They sell everything they have worldwide, not specific to a particular region.

Yeah, "users are not ready for the switch". What a ridiculous mentality. Playing victim and blame their users. I hope Huawei brand rots. First, just refactor any "android" string to harmonyos and lied, called it totally different OS than android. Then this. True, android isn't just about Google. But it's android. Other Google-less OS, whatever their names are, CalyxOS, LineageOS, etc. still accept that they're android.

If you change the system language to English, you'll notice that in Running Services, something that's originally names as"HarmonyOS" would change name to "Android System"... They could replace "HarmonyOS" with Android in a single OTA because "HarmonyOS" is currently a Android compatible, just like Alibaba's YunOS years ago, rather than something independent.
