"It's like labelling a car as V8 but refusing to say which V8, purposefully, so the customer expects the power of a 6.0 but ends up with a 4.8."
Love these car analogies.
"As far as trusting Google and Samsung, i strongly advise you not to trust any company."
I wouldn't want to and I usually don't, I just didn't really have another option with this topic, but I get you now.
"Point is the tech industry is full of incorrect or half truths that have become "common knowledge" and are actively reinforced by manufacturers because it financially benefits them."
That is absolutely correct yes, I just don't see how marketing anything as a product that has a TFT display would benefit a company, I mean that instantly made me not want this, even though I love what the current Honor is doing with their Magic and number series. I know it's much cheaper than any of those, but phones with IPS displays can also be had at this price.
Then there is the Galaxy Tab S8, which was also marketed as a device with a TFT display and many people didn't like that, now the Tab S9 has OLED.

DarlingYext, 29 Jul 2023I may really actually be wrong here, but it just makes abso... moreI will apologize for being hostile. You catch more flies with honey etc.
What you may not have realized is that any topic a marketing team touches becomes questionable at best. "TFT" is used as a label out of ignorance, or outright manipulation when a manufacturer wishes to avoid giving details. Commonly TN panels are labeled as "TFT" because they have much poorer colour reproduction. It's like labelling a car as V8 but refusing to say which V8, purposefully, so the customer expects the power of a 6.0 but ends up with a 4.8.
As far as trusting Google and Samsung, i strongly advise you not to trust any company.
I'll give you more examples of other companies using similar behaviors.
Here in North America the telecoms often label HUSPA (a 3G technology) as "4G" purposely confusing customers into assuming it is LTE. They delay updates just so they can make changes to the UI to keep up the charade.
Qualcomm no longer provides as many details on their SOCs architectures (adreno cores and frequency) so it becomes harder for savy customers to assess and compare. The entire chip fabrication industry has played the same game with node sizes, intel eventually renaming their 10nm process to “intel 7“.
Labeling things as Li-ion, which could be many different chemistries like LiFePO4 or Li-To which have different charging voltages and properties.
TV manufacturers slapping "HD" on low resolution devices, because they were capable of receiving a 1080p signal, not displaying it. Point is the tech industry is full of incorrect or half truths that have become "common knowledge" and are actively reinforced by manufacturers because it financially benefits them.

Anonymous, 29 Jul 2023"Then what is it, when a certain phone or even a monit... moreI may really actually be wrong here, but it just makes absolutely zero sense, and most websites do point towards TFT being a separate technology and if it really isn't then I have so many questions now.
At the beginning of the argument I was mostly going by my own personal experiences, so far any phone I've seen, that was advertised to have just a TFT display had terrible viewing angles and brightness compared to IPS or PLS displays, let alone OLED displays.
Little bit less of "are you unable to read" and other hostile stuff would be appreciated though, I don't think I was hostile. I'm reading what you and others are saying but Google and Samsung say otherwise and I'm sorry but I'd rather believe them, but if you could provide some proof or what these phones actually use I may "switch sides" sorta speak.
Okay, so why are there still phones and monitors advertised as TFT ? What type of display does something like for example the Galaxy A22 5G or even this phone actually use? Yeah, I got that all phones use TFT technology under their display tech, okay sure, but if it can't just straight up be a TFT display, then what does this phone have?

DarlingYext, 29 Jul 2023"NO display is tft.."
Then what is it, when a ... more"Then what is it, when a certain phone or even a monitor is advertised as TFT?
Displays such as the one on the Galaxy A22 5G which says it's using TFT are clearly different than for example the IPS LCD display of the A13."
Are you unable to read.
BECAUSE PASSIVE MATRIX was used aswell in that era.
The DISPLAY is LCD (TN, VA, IPS, PLS in the a13) or OLED
And the BACKPLANE is TFT (active matrix) or PASSIVE (individual wires with transistors elsewhere) which hasn't been used in consumer high resolution devices for a decade.
TFT is a production technology that creates a thin layer of active circuits. It does not create an image, it simply provides the power to the pixels. ALL modern smartphone displays use TFT. Differences in quality and materials of the TFT layer MAY affect image quality and brightness due to blocking some light. These differences in quality DO NOT make it a different technology, no different than ANY other product having various levels of quality.

Then what is it, when a ... moreAnd if you see differences between the display of a Galaxy A22 and an A13, that does not have to be down to technological differences. It can just be differences in manufacturing, it could be a different display supplier, or a lower-grade panel of the same technology. There can even be differences between the displays of the same phone. Many phones and TVs source the displays for the same model from different manufacturers ("panel lottery").
But as said, if you don't want to learn and listen you can stay dumb, it's your choice.

No...
LCD can be active matrix or passive matrix. Since over a decade ago, every LCD is active matrix, which is TFT.
Why do you think it's called "AMOLED"? Because it uses TFT. As AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. The "Active Matrix" part is the TFT.

"Thin Film Transistor LCD panel. A type of LCD flat panel display screen in which each pixel is controlled by one to four transistors. The TFT technology provides the best resolution of all the flat panel techniques, but it is also the most expensive. TFT screens are sometimes called active matrix LCDs."
So it's a TYPE(!) of LCD, meaning it can exist separately.

DarlingYext, 28 Jul 2023"AMOLED displays also contain a TFT layer .." ... moreYour car and steering wheel are an excellent analogy. Now apply it consistently. NO display is tft, just as NO car is a steering wheel. Some marketing departments in the early lcd days specified "TFT LCD" because PASSIVE matrix was a thing. It was the same garbage marketing with "LED" tvs and monitors. You want to see an even better example of how marketing teams and news outlets get technology wrong? Look at the bs around LTPO and variable refresh rates. It's been wrongly regurgitated that LTPO is needed for variable refresh rates, even Wikipedia has fallen for it.

They should serious change the name. I mean "honor"? Seriously? Phone named honor... do they not yet realize the name alone throws a lot of potential buyers? Or do they want overseas chinese people to buy their midrange phone to "honor" the ccp?

arka, 28 Jul 2023Does users buy these phones ? Or is there some other motive... moreWhile the flagship IPhone, Galaxy will always sell good numbers worldwide sales, the average person on the street will own a midrange or budget phone.
Most people over 60 don't care about technology and will just have a cheap phone they use mostly for calls & texts.
And parents will just buy their young kids a cheap phone so it won't be a waste of money when they drop break it!

DarlingYext, 28 Jul 2023"AMOLED displays also contain a TFT layer .."
... moreAlthough the debate has escalated to another level, I find fault in your basic argument that TFT is inherently bad and 'will take us to 2012'.
No all encompassing absolute statement can be made about any hardware tech without actually looking at its execution.
iphone 11 used IPS LCD
also BLU Studio X10 costing less than 1/10 used IPS LCD
Needless to say the execution of the technology was different on the two phones.
Can you make an absolute statement about IPS LCD by just looking at the cheaper phone?
Let us see how Honor executes the technology on this phone and then give the verdict.
Besides, another factor that needs to be kept in mind is that it is an affordable segment phone.
