Onanymaus, 24 Aug 2023I doubt you will reply to this at all. Can you list the Xia... moreI actually used my Redmi 3 Pro (ido) as a daily driver for nearly 7 years. Yeah, it got slower in the last two years but it still did its job. For 170 dollars it was a pretty great device. My banking app started to refuse to work on android 5 and I couldn't find a satisfying custom ROM, hence, if Xiaomi would have supported it for longer I would maybe still use it.

But I'm probably more the exception to the average user 😅

4 years of MIUI updates, there is no chance that xiaomi is going to support their 19329392393 phones with 4 years of Android OS updates, there are like 2 dudes who making firmwares lol.

Then we can check whether those Xiaomi phones you used received software updates and their last Android versions.

Anonymous, 24 Aug 2023I am speaking as a xiaomi phone user for 6 years. Multip... moreNot trusting means that when Xiaomi is now promising that the K60 Ultra comes with 4 android OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates, we shouldn't trust them. And I see no reason why that should be the case. Especially not based on your list that has nothing to do with this promise for this device. Devices from the past sold without this promise, is obviously not a goods basis for this. This policy did not apply to them and they did not have the cost of this level of support baked into the price of those devices, like this has.

        1. Android OS upgrades depends on multiple factors and some have learned the lack of driver support from certain HW manufacturers means offering another Android OS update simply isn't possible, yet offering a more modern UI with new features and security updates is still possible. The alternative would have been being stuck on old MIUI and old android. At least getting new features is better. This could also be related to the support cost built-in to the device and has nothing to do with your statement of trust. Because again, nothing more was ever promised. Hence no promise was broken.

        2. Intentionally, like apple with old iphones? Nope. All software updates for smartphones, computers, TVs, cars etc. can have bugs that wasn't discovered prior to launch. Obviously Xiaomi, like any other, depends on doing their best to keep customers happy and return to buy a new product from them for their next upgrade. This is very basic and obvious.

        3. / 4. History is the past, today and the future is what matters. Xiaomi first changed their update policy with the 11T-series and now with this K60 Ultra series. It is very easy to check the upgrade path of a device today prior to purchase. Expecting a $99 device to get the same treatment as a $999 one isn't very logical. Then they would operate with a loss for the $99 device.

        5. And so does Samsung. Nobody forces you to buy those models. It is not hidden information and these are typically budget devices. Hence you get what you pay for and you, like everyone else, can tell these companies that you don't want this by not buying that particular model and instead buy the model that comes with the most recent android version and the promise of X amount of android upgrades and x years of security updates. But guess what? Some don't care, and just wants the cheapest phone that works. They buy those phones and they should be allowed to do so if they wish. There are many brands that don't offer a single android OS upgrade for several/all of their devices, yet people still buy them. Strange for me, but it makes sense for them. We have different priorities.

        6. Same as all other third party android smartphone manufacturers. Do you want zero android smartphones to be launched in the second half of every year? It takes time to launch android 1X on a new device after it is made available to pixel. Even when android 1X is launched in Pixel, it can be buggy and take months to get stable. So launching a new phone in october this year with last year's android could be a much better solution and experience for the end customer than a buggy android 14. This due to googles "fixed" time frame for release of new android versions. Check your second point, there is a link here. Rush = bugs.

        7. Yes, let's all stop buying from smaller brands for everything and only buy from the biggest ones. That won't make absolutely everything much more expensive at all . . . (sarcasm btw). Competition is healthy and android as of 2023 wouldn't be as it is if it wasn't for Xiaomi, and others, and their influence on the UI and functionality.

The size of the department is not what decides for how long a device is supported, but the cost being included in the price of the device, or alternative income streams from the already sold device. This is why Xiaomi, Samsung, etc. can say during the launch of a device for just how long it will receive support. It is baked into the price, and/or they have income from use of their devices, and based on this income and their growth as a company they can grow their departments, not the other way around.

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2023Nice joke. I appreciate that. Mi 11 is not even a 3 year... moreThe Mi 11 is three years old and launched in a period when Xiaomi at best offered 2 android OS upgrades. Their policy changed about 10 months after the Mi 11 and yet it still gets this treatment. No joke, but simple fact.

It really isn't complicated. Either phones from third parties (Xiaomi, Samsung etc.) has to become increasingly more expensive to bake in the costs of five years of support, which gives pixels and iphones an unfair competitive advantage, or they have to find other means of income, such as advertisements - which has been attempted with a lot of contempt from customers.

If you seriously think Xiaomi, or any of the others, can compete with the bundled and default google play store, then think again. It has been attempted since the pretty much the first android phone and no such luck.

Unless EU comes in and demands that users will have to make that choice by themselves, but even so - the google play store will likely be the default for most as it will be the same across brands and has the biggest assortment of apps.

Google could fix this by offering a decent portion of the play store cake to the manufacturers. Leading to smaller up front cost for buyers and no need for ad support in the UI and no need for a app store for each brand, with limited apps for each brand's app store. It would even lead to revenue from devices older than five years and the possibility to support popular devices still generating income for even longer. Less e-waste as a result.

A possible future solution, after EU comes inn and demands user chosen app store in smartphones to avoid monopoly/doupoly situation, is if a third party major appstore offers the manufacturers a significant kickback/commission for the apps on their devices. If this app store becomes popular across brands, and even operating systems, then it is a win for us customers and google will also have to compete with them rather than simply exploit their current android monopoly.

Multiple reasons NEVER / NOT to trust xiaomi software support promises:

            1. Xiaomi has long history of updating MIUI without updating the Android OS version.

MIUI upgrades =/= Android OS upgrades.

            2. Xiaomi has long history of breaking the phone hardware by giving buggy software updates.

            3. Xiaomi has long history of giving too late software support.

            4. Xiaomj has long history of only giving short software support to its phones.

            5. Xiaomi has many devices sold with older Android OS version from 2 years prior. For example many new phones from 2023, still launch with Android 12 from 2021. Many New phones from 2022, comes with Android 11 from 2020, etc.

            6. YES, xiaomi giving 2-3 years of OS upgrades to some of its phones BUT by launching it with older Android OS version before.

I mean what is the point of giving 2-3 OS upgrades, if xiaomi launching it with Android OS version from 2 years ago.

            7. Xiaomi has smaller human resources and money resources compared to big companies like Apple, Samsung, Google, to even possibly give long software suppory to its phones.

Of course you will need root to debloat it every time if you use miui but you always have the option of using a custom rom and it is still the best option since no one can match the hardware at this price(if the global pricing is good)

Anton., 22 Aug 2023Promises, from what is said to what is done there is a long wayBack in 2020, some people were also skeptical whether Samsung can really give promised 3 years OS update. Because Samsung was known to be lackluster in giving updates before 2020.

Its understandable if you are skeptical of Xiaomi. But, do you have proof that Xiaomi will fail to deliver the promised 4 years OS update?

Anonymous, 23 Aug 2023That's good but the question is will their phones'... moreI hope Xiaomi dont follow Samsung's footsteps like how some A51 started facing motherboard issue after receiving 2nd OS update from A11 to A12.

Samsung gives monthly patches to all new S and Z phones for the first 4 years, also monthly patches for A5x phones for the first 3 years followed by quarterly/biannual updates depends on which model.

jiyen235, 23 Aug 202399% of consumers don't buy such phones. They buy iPhon... moreBut if xiaomi actually want to grow as a company, they have to appeal to the mainstream audience outside of just super budget phones. General consumers are happy to purchase from different companies IF they feel they are getting something better then what apple and samsung offer. There's a reason why huawei grew so huge, and why oppo is the 3rd largest phone maker in the world. People like options. Also, your point makes no sense, savvy people are the ones upgrading their phones more often, so why would they care about 5+ years of software updates?

So if instead of focusing on stuff like software updates, they started partnering with more mobile networks, releasing their phones sooner internationally, and did some marketing, they would be a much bigger company then they are today.

Mi 11 is not even a 3 years old device. Also, google never forcing any companies to use Android OS. Buy apps from Play store = profit fees for Google. Buy apps from GetApps = profit fees for xiaomi. Simple as that.

No need to justify why xiaomi cant give monthly patches to its phone.

Ouifuf, 23 Aug 2023I wouldn't care and I promise you 99% of consumers don... more99% of consumers don't buy such phones. They buy iPhones or Galaxy A series phones, or in the case of most people outside the US and Europe, cheap and budget phones from Xiaomi and Samsung. If someone's going to buy a flagship/flagship killer, they are savvy, they care about the intricate details of the product, in other words not an average buyer. I know you were talking about software support and not headphone jacks, I created a comparison there to show my point that giving manufacturers the power is never a good thing, consumers should be respected and value should be added to products.
