Zenfone looks good on paper but bad in practice. Its full of bugs and software is un-optimized. Zenfone 9 call quality is terrible, the other side can hardly hear sometimes. These phones are expensive too.

Expensive phone with no guarantee for future update support. People who want android choose Samsung's flagship for the same price.

Asus makes great computers...
Doesn't mean they make great phones.
I've had a couple of Asus phones in the past because I was curious, and they were buggy as heck (despite being flagships, Zenphone 8 and ROG phone, or whatever the first one was called).

really sad, back in the days Zenfone made a unique phone maybe people here forgot... like high resolution selfie, Intel SoC, first phone with 4GB RAM (which is crazy), periscope camera, laser autofocus and others.
now only compact is their selling point, but most people don't like it.

This is a very sad news! The compact category will disappear, and even real flagship phones, because those gaming phones for example lacks a great camera. And I wonder who buys those gaming phones anyway?(in physical stores you do not see any gaming phones usually). You can play games with any flagship phone.
HTC is off from the flagship territory, now Asus.

If Asus had bet in the marketing department instead of releasing zenfones with the highest chiptset available.
There is an incredible demand for android phones with a 5.5-6 inch screens and yet, there isn't one company capable of doing just that. The Zenfone was great and all but those people who want a top end snapdragon chipset also want a bigger screen phone.
The Zenfone is a weird phone, i would suggest continuing launching zenfones but intended for those people who like the design of apple but who can't or don't want to spend 1K on it.
Make it at 280 with a low-mid chipset, plastic frame and back with an lcd panel.
Make the cameras decent because that's what middle age people want.
Little phone, with a decent chipset and good cameras at an affordable price.
Asus would be amazed how many people in Europe are looking for a phone like this, i know, i work for a major electronic retail store in Portugal.
Another thing, how the hell is Asus expecting to sell these phones if it isn't even available in a country like Portugal, it's in Europe for crying out loud...

Hopefully (has to) Asus will come out and make a definitive statement as it has only just launched the ZenFone 10, which the announcement could affect sale.

ZenFone 10 V Asus RoG 7
ZenFone 9 V Asus RoG 6
Maybe sales were impacted by the close release dates, and / or having gaming (flagship) specs near duplicated in a your compact flagship flagship phone ?

I was just thinking that discontinuing a phone series is an easier pill to shallow for consumers than putting out another iteration with the same price but with downgraded hardware

I have a ZenFone 9. Previously had an 8. Love the phones but this is not surprising . They are not present in Australia. Only one shop sells them. And the big factor is that 2 years of updates is just not worth buying at the price they ask. A pixel 7 is less with much better updates and takes better photos. I'm happy to replace yearly and as a tradie tend to smash phones so not really an issue for me... But most people want their phone to last years.
I'm not happy... Will have to go back to a pixel... Allegedly they getting smaller. My S22 work issue phone is the worst phone I've ever owned and iPhone is not an option.

It's a manufacturer's choice, totally, but of course they won't go unpunished for making it clear that they have no intention to provide support to their customers as long as other manufacturers do.
