Is this true 5nm? If so, who manufactured it? Samsung and TSMC are the only fabs I know that have the capability to produce 5nm. Or they just branded SMIC's N+2's 7nm as 5nm? And it's like a midrange chip since it didn't use cortex X-cores. And the GPU, is that a tweaked version of Mali GPUs?

Aierlan, 29 Aug 2023Both. Two variants. The yield on SMIC chips is very poor so... moreActually the 5G variant will be China exclusive and the Global is Snapdragon one.
Meanwhile seems that Kirin 9000S is SMIC 7nm, while the other mentioned Kirins (720 and 830) are made on Dual 14nm

The yield on SMIC chips is very poor so there will be a limited number of kirin 9000s 5g models. I think it will be very hard to buy the Kirin models as the demand will far outstrip the supply

At that time, China can't manufacture advance prosess bellow 14nm.

Anonymous, 29 Aug 202312nmFunny story there are rumours that points that is Dual 14 nm. I mean they used a dual 14nm chip to bring 7nm performance, but with 10nm consumption, which is interesting.
And the performance (Kirin 9000S) is on par with Kirin 990. The advantage is that they can use 5G and the process is hella cheap now.
And is allowing UNISOC to enter with better proposals now.
Seems that Huawei opened a door that other brands might start to look since seems to be cheap and really decent for the performance given.

Avon B7, 29 Aug 2023Huawei can produce any 5G modem without patent issues. They... moreActually they solved the 5G modem issues aparently and the deal is to reach EU. So yeah, Huawei must abide with Ericson rules in Europe, but now they can sell it. But the issue is that Qualcomm is out of the equation since is American, so they have 3 options....
- Going for Mediatek, which is unlikely
- Going with UNISOC, which is likely but they don't have any powerhouses
- Going with their own chip, which is likely to happen. But they have at best 14nm chips.

ASL, 29 Aug 2023they can, but the tech is patented. you don't get it ?... moreHuawei can produce any 5G modem without patent issues. They are a major SEP player of 5G.
The liklihood is that no one can produce a 5G modem without paying 5G royalties to Huawei.
The deal with Ericsson is a cross licencing deal to avoid patent issues with each other.
The problems with Apple/Ericsson are of a different nature. They are/were suing each other for different reasons.
Huawei's 5G modem problems are in manufacturing, not patents. It looks like those manufacturing issues (5G RF BAW filters for example) have been overcome.

Coca cola patent is already expired by now
Second,
No company is able to forbid Huawei using their 5G patent
Because Huawei then will retaliate and that company can't produced 5G.

Internally there's a lot going on with 5G and the new chipset. Those are major steps forward independently of performance.

Not sure about that two-tone design, I prefer Google's solution. But nevertheless, camera performance is going to be stellar as always.
