TCL unveils its first NxtPaper phones with eye-care technology, including 4G and 5G versions

29 August 2023
The TCL 40 NxtPaper and TCL 40 NxtPaper use the tech previously featured on tablets. It's easy on the eyes and supports a paper-like stylus experience.

This company is like the closest thing to a scam that I know from a mainstream company. They should be sued by competitors on the amount of lies that come out of their press releases. Come on, everything they claim to be a "breakthrough" has already been done by competitors: the so-called NXTVISION visual enhancement is done equal or better by Samsung's or even Xiaomi's OLED screen tuning. Then we have NXTURBO, a pure marketing name that means nothing (their memories and CPUs are so slow that you don't feel any improvements). Battery charging speeds aren't in any way "fast" for today's standards. Software support is one of the worst in the current market (no major version upgrades, just scarce security updates for like two years maximum).
Now they have a "new" NXT-paperscam that has been TUV-Rheinlad certified for Low blue light at hardware level and reflection-free. Right off the bat, I remember this having been done in the past, for LCD screens, by the likes of Motorola, Oppo or even the now defunct LG. And I won't even mention low-light extra dimming, that pretty much every brand has nowadays.
But then their PR won't tell you that these supposedly "breakthrough" screens max out at 500 nits brightness (check out their official specs page). So I think TCL's eye care is only for when you are inside, if that's the case they should include a pair of TCL-sunglasses so that you can actually read content outside without damaging your eyesight.

And for the icing on the cake, they release a 5G model that is more expensive than the 4G version, but is heavily downgraded. Why?
For TCL, it's like people who use 5G, for some reason, take less selfies, can live with even slower charging speed and most importantly, their eyes need less protection, since they can use more eyestrain to read small text on an HD screen instead of FHD.

Seriously, I have no fanboy feelings for or against any company, but considering what TCL keeps releasing every time, I can only label their market strategy as SCAM.

But, oddly enough, that hasn't been always the case. I remember their Alcatel Idol devices as being great midrange daily driver devices with affordable prices, with some of the best sound quality I have ever heard on a phone up to this day. The original TCL PLEX was actually a "breakthrough" device for the balanced specs and design overall for its price tag.

But now, TCL has turned into an Oukitel-level generic manufacturer trying to sell us fake specs for affordable prices, but that is pretty much overthrown in specs by most of its real brand competitors.

This technology looks neat but wow TCL just hates releasing phones that are actually good

Not great phones, TCL I expected better.

        Another tablet size fone 😡

€50 for 5G tax and display resolution downgrade 😑

It's nice that companies are starting care about user's eyes.

looks similar to oppo a17 for the 4g version.. but with improved specs and display. for the 5g version? better off getting their 2022 TCL stylus.

I will wait until someone else picks up this tech. No worth it to pay for such a device just due to the screen.

So this is not the panel that has zero backlight

                      Guess they scrapped that

Wish they used a bit better chipsets tho

As for the TVs are those dual display TVs.. didn't expect them to invest so heavily in that technology

                        Maybe stick to making TVs

"Eye comfort"- right, when they annouched this Nxtpaper screen it was supposed to be something like E-paper, which would reflect the light and use that instead of backlight.
There is no mention of what technology the stylus will use? I assume its not Wacom or at least not Emr which Samsung uses?
This color temperature thing... Can't we already use eye comfort on like, all new Android phones?
The matte screen- can't we just apply a screen protector?
If it had a good stylus like EMR and transflective or fully reflective with frontlight screen- that would be different and worth a try imo.

Well, A24 is just miles ahead but basically it's the screen tech that makes this phone expensive...

PanRT, 29 Aug 2023One update Android 14 And end 😂 rly shi.. phone.I swear. I have a TCL 20R 5G which released on Android 11. Still haven't received an update :/

Why does the 40 have a Dimensity chip while the 50 still uses Helio?

The TCL 40 NxtPaper is actually pretty cool and interesting, the 5G version of it is terrible as usual for entry level 5G phones.

Clever tech is no use without a decent chipset to power it. Use any phone with a shit chip in and everything stutters and takes an age to load or do anything so no matter what the specs say always look at what's powering the phone first or it will be a disappointing experience.
