Unexpected move by Tecno, wow!
That's the type of device I would never have because I don't have this kind of necessity, but I like when brands does things like this, specially brands like Infinix, Tecno and some others that are constantly bashed by unintelligent comments.
Will Phantom Ultimate work? Only time will tell, but I hope Tecno does a good job.

W... moreI'd be angry if the larger screen size shrank to... another large screen. What's the point of the only 2 modes are "too big" and "way too big"?
The entire point of rollable or foldable phones is that you have a choice of small AND large in one device.

Anonymous, 31 Aug 2023A copy of lg's foldable which was not launched officia... moreNow you know why I still truly miss LG in the smartphone market. They really aren't afraid to be different from the norm. Even to this day, my V50's detachable Dual Screen case and my Wing's swivel screen with manual gimbal camera control still attract a lot of attention from typical popular brand users, including those with foldable phones. I still remembered this one time at a cosplay event where attendees weren't batting an eye on my partner's Z Fold3 but got excited seeing my Wing despite us both doing mobile vlogging simultaneously. I can understand that since they never see something like the Wing ever exist before.
Just about the only thing they got it wrong is the marketing department. If they got it right, they can disrupt Samsung-Apple duoploy.

Ryse, 31 Aug 2023Given enough exposure, rollables could soon kill foldables ... moreI always think of the same thing. With rollable screen, you can even expand it wider to a legit 12" or 13" tablet. That gives you a 3-in-1 screen resolution flexibility, which is something foldable screens can never ever do.

W... moreI would say the opposite...
If they can get it working and not too vulnerable, it MIGHT mean the return of one hand operable phones, that can then be rolled out to phablet size when needed.
Currently the amount of phones less than 65mm wide with high specs are close to zero.
and though we can operate a large part, of somewhat larger, most current high end devices can only be operated using both hands.
Someone made a more thorough analysis of this with plots, that I have elaborated on slightly here: https://eskerahn.dk/?p=2922

Ryse, 31 Aug 2023Given enough exposure, rollables could soon kill foldables ... moreMy biggest concern is the roll itself, flexible displays are almost per definition fragile, so even the tiniest grain of sand rolled in could cause havoc. So it is hard to imagine a pocket or pouch clean enough to transport it.
On the inwards folding ones you can have a say ½mm gap, to make room for dirt. It will be hard to roll up with similar gap without the roll (and thus phone) getting thick. So something very effective needs to brush off the display-film when it rolls in.

Anonymous, 31 Aug 2023They're still pretty irrelevant and fairly middlingIrrelevant? Transsion (Tecno and Infinix) are now the 5th largest smartphone vendors worldwide, and they are the fastest growing one. How is that irrelevant?

Looks fragile and the time it takes to roll in and out would eventually become obnoxious/annoying.

Given enough exposure, rollables could soon kill foldables since a 6.7" could probably roll to ~7.8" tab. Just like foldables but PROBABLY cheaper & thinner.
The only foldables that won't go obsolete would be those that also roll into a much bigger size like 10+"
