Vegetaholic, 02 Sep 2023Anybody can buy what they like, but that does not mean that... moreJust because I can afford to "waste" €1000 doest mean im stupid, plenty people "waste" much more money on fancy cars just because they like the look of the od the noise or just want to show off. And for biggest "waste" look at womens handbags most are "worth" no more than €20 but are priced from €20 to €20000. I suggest you learn a bit about how real world works and maby then you find a job which will pay you enough for you not to care at all wether the price is €400 or €1000! This phone is not aimed for students who have to count pennnies (and there is nothing wrong with that).

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2023Sure, there's only the Realme 9 Pro+, Zenfones 9 and 1... moreWho TF wants to carry around a separate DAC and a separate SSD everywhere? You're delusional and confirming the point. You went through his list of needs and 'corrected' them.

PhoneFreak45, 01 Sep 2023I have to agree, it sure is stupid to buy the only phone on... moreSure, there's only the Realme 9 Pro+, Zenfones 9 and 10, Reno8, Xiaomi 13, Pixel 7, S22/23 and A54 that are small phones with a relatively large sensor in the past year or two.
Then for extensible storage and a 3.5 jack, add a USB-C SSD drive and a DAC, which you probably want anyway if you actually care about wired headphones. If you're using Bluetooth (and why wouldn't you? It's what comes with the bundle!) then who cares about the jack??
Even with the cost of a nice DAC and a USB-C splitter, you still probably spend less than 1000 and have longer software support.

PhoneFreak45, 01 Sep 2023Pssst, a 2X crop of the main sensor is still gathering more... more2x zoom is garbage, and it's 2x compared to 24mm, which isn't even a standard lens by film standards. (The "zoom" mode is 73% of the frame of a 35mm shot.) Cellphones regularly have between 3x (Xiaomi 13, iPhone, practically everyone else) and 5x (Pixel 7) optical zoom.
A 3x crop of the main sensor is 5.5 MP, which puts it solidly subpar compared to the S23 and pretty comparable spec-wise to the 3x Xperia 5 II (except with only 40% of the pixel count). For this to deliver the same MP count (and thus the same feature detection assuming perfect sharpness) as the 5 III at 4.4x, you would need a 232 MP main sensor (or the same 52MP sensor but with 12MP in the middle 20%, but mixed-pixel-size sensors don't exist, and the center sensor would still be relatively pinhole sized, ruining any hope of bokeh in portraits)
Beyond that, the ultra-wide doesn't even do macro shots.
Comparing to the 5 IV is nonsense, because Sony had already begun weaking the zoom at this generation. You might as well compare to the Pro-I "zoom" camera, which was a pitiful 2x. Compare the new 5 V to its current price and/or size competitors, plus the 1 IV and 1 V, and all of the 5's.
Also, the tired defense of "learn to photograph" does not excuse a class-lagging auto mode. Everyone else takes a Sony sensor and makes it deliver awesome shots by default. Whether manual mode makes "awesome-er" shots or not ... this is not a valid balance to an embarrassing auto mode.

44alexsmith, 01 Sep 2023For me it would have been the perfect size phone if it had ... moreThe way to do that while keeping the 21:9 aspect ratio would be to make the bezels on both sides thicker. I don't think most other users would want that.

For me it would have been the perfect size phone if it had the "width" of the Sony Xperia 1 V or Galaxy S23.

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2023"being able to buy" and "being stupid enough... moreI have to agree, it sure is stupid to buy the only phone on the market that suits your needs!
-Compact
-Large camera sensor
-MicroSD
-Headphone jack
There is literally no other phone on the market that fits the bill. Stop complaining and let people live their lives. Just because you can't imagine needs different than your own, doesn't mean you get to insult people for shopping for their needs instead of your needs.

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2023Seriously, look at the camera comparison:
https://www.gs... more"I pressed a button in auto mode and the image wasn't as good as this camera sensor is capable of, this imaging system must suck!"
Learn how to use manual mode or get out, because this phone isn't for you.

None the usual suspects (B&H, Best Buy, and Amazon, in that order) have this up for pre-order yet, which is a bad sign for US availability. Usually the US gets the 1 and 5 series phones, but not the 10, but I guess we're just getting the 1 V this year.

Seriously, look at the camera comparison:
https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=4&idPhone1=12534&idPhone2=12380&idPhone3=12172
Go to the tomato. Now go to the red things in the bottom left. Now go to the map and look at the text, like "Abbey Road" in the upper left near the green patch. Look at the wood grain on the pencil tips. Switch to low light and look in the same places. Feel free to explore.
The biggest selling point on the Mark V is the camera and it is STILL totally unspectacular after years of customers complaining!

For the record, that last comment should have MDR-7506 and not MDR-506
...and it's a clear "No Buy" from me.

Anonymous, 01 Sep 2023why they don't make the cameras with standard focal le... moreAmen to 16/35/85 as three-cam focal lengths and 1.4 aperture.
Meanwhile, Fairphone 5 just announced 8 years of updates for 300 euros less.
This thing is full of compromises and still probably has the weakest flashlight on the market. Same display as predecessors, so thanks in advance for the magenta/green vertical screen lines. No VRR. Heavy. Thick. No LED. Still gets hot.
In typical Sony fashion, the actual release is still a month or more away.
If I want a great Sony camera plus compact phone call device, it would not be the Xperia Five Mark Five. I'd rather pocket a Nokia 3310 plus a RX0, ZV-1, RX100, or HX99.
Jack doesn't have a proper amp. Seriously, compare the LG, Xperia, and WM1A Walkman reviews on AudioScienceReview or try plugging in some high-impedance headphones. Sony has the technical know-how to make this 3.5mm jack shine and they choose "no".
Finally, the bundle. WH-CH720, worth 100 bucks. Not foldable, no case. This is maybe what you'd buy if you had no noise cancelling stuff already and wanted huge around-ear headphones but didn't have enough money for a thousand dollar phone. Out of Sony's entire lineup---MDR-506, LinkBuds, MDR-1AM2, wired buds, etc.---they really picked the recent release LEAST likely to be appreciated by buyers. It's not worth the hassle of reselling. It's good it's packaged in sustainable material because the entire headphones should be recycled upon arrival.

B3ebe, 01 Sep 2023I have been using Xperia 5 III for 2 years and now its time... morePixel series is 51% Samsung phone (51% phone parts designed and made by samsung).
I would say it's a Samsung phone but with stock android.
