All the current phones over-impose a high quality shot of the moon, it's not actually what your camera can see - you probably observed that it's very bad quality while zooming and then suddenly very high res moon with no overblown lights.

I'll never forget how Apple was selling cameras on iPhones with ultrawide and 2x zoom as 4x zoom cameras.
Apple is going to sell this 3.5x zoom as an optical 7x zoom. Anyone with a minimum understanding would know that a lossless crop in of 85mm is nothing but digital zoom and never equivalent to real 170 mm focal length, but we can be sure that the majority of US YouTubers is going to repeat this marketing BS.
The beauty of S23 Ultra's 10x zoom is the unmatched natural bokeh.

I tested multiple Pixel 7 Pro units and there were significant differences how well they could take a photo of the moon (sharpness of the lens as well as image stabilization).
An advice: At night, the Pixel 7 Pro only uses the full resolution mode of the sensor when you take a photo of the full(!) moon and use at least 15x zoom. Also, 30x images of the 7 Pro have very bad image processing. When you take photos of distant objects, 30x should be avoided nearly always, you often get significantly better results by cropping a 15x photo. If you edit the raw file, then 30x might be ok.

And that's the case for the Pixel 7 Pro's periscope because it suffers from diffraction due to a low pixel size / f-number ratio (0.2). Therefore, the periscope suffers from no Quad Bayer artifacts because the sensor possibly already outresolves the lens. If the Pixel 7 Pro's periscope had a 48 megapixel Bayer sensor, the 10x images might not be really sharper due to diffraction.

Just imagining how great zoom it would be with normal bayer or in monochrome...

The base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models ARE EXPECTED to feature an all-new 48-megapixel
The iPhone 15 is NOT expected to use the Sony IMX-803 image sensor from the iPhone 15 and will instead use a DIFFERENT Sony sensor with improved capabilities.
There is EVIDENCE that Apple tested different configurations of the base model iPhone 15, one of which featured the RUMOURED stacked camera sensor system, while the other did not. It is currently UNCLEARWHETHER OR NOT the stacked sensor system is present on the final units. Stacked camera sensors allow for faster readout speeds and improved low-light imaging.
No significant upgrades ARE EXPECTED for the Ultra Wide camera, which is EXPECTED to continue to have a 12-megapixel resolution and an ƒ/2.4 aperture.

the xiaomi 13 ultra surpasses this but by far!! and surely the vivo x100 pro plus when it comes out will humiliate the iphone in every way!! It hurts that the vivo does not leave China and the 13 ultra is still a bit expensive, because I feel that the pixel 8 pro will be a total disappointment

They are increasing the size of the phones
I love small phones, but I always had to choose the Max model, and the only reason for this was the low battery of small phones.

Thought Apple would bring a larger main sensor to the table. It's just gonna be the exact same cameras.
