200MP telephoto cameras will be the hottest new trend, according to Samsung

19 September 2023
The inherent zoom capabilities of these sensors have only been used in main cameras with wide lenses for now. In the future a 3x cam could also reach out to 6x and 12x.

Interestingly, Samsung has removed this paragraph from their article:
"For example, on a 3x telephoto module with a 200MP sensor, lossless zoom scenarios can be run from 3x to 6x to 12x. This impressive capability means that more diverse scenes can be captured without any loss of resolution."

Maybe a marketing decision as they maybe don't plan to release a phone soon where they advertise "12x".
Other than that, another possible reason why they removed that paragraph is that the term "lossless" is not correct, especially due to diffraction and noise. Though this doesn't mean that it would perform significantly worse than a dedicated "12x" camera, which may suffer from the same amount of diffraction and noise.

No thanks, Samsung. Xiaomi 13 Pro/Ultra, Vivo X90 Pro/Pro+, and Oppo Find X6 Pro all proves that sensor size is still more important than Megapixel resolution. You can put any Megapixel resolution you like on a camera sensor for pixel binning purpose, but you cannot ever simply change the camera sensor's physical size.

I seldomly use the ultrawide camera so brands should provide only 2 cameras, one main wide and another telephoto camera, that will be sufficient for most of users because telephoto camera is good 👍😊

i have the S23 Ultra and i am the first time really dissapointed by the camera.1x-3x zoom,in good light the S10+ is equal,in low light the S23U is remarkable better ,i have my S10+500GB for 4.5 Years Now and not even 1 time any Problem. With the S23 Ultra Camera,Samsung fu..ed it up,a Disaster, who needs Moon Pics?In daily Life in need 1-3x zoom and in this Range the S10+ is equal,i did really about 100 Comparsion Pics but it is what it is.I tried all diffrent settigs with the camera assistant, but no way for a better quality. For this Price i could buy two laptops,i have the 500GB Version.I had the S7 Edge and was enthusiastic, same with the S10+,but the S23Ultra is IMHO a big fail.i hope with some camera updates they can make it a bit better.Shame on you @Samsung.

justasmile, 20 Sep 2023Not 8mp, but 12mp is just right.okay, so explain to me why a standard 12MP camera is better than a 200MP camera with a larger sensor & uses pixel binning to create a 12.5mp photo

I think this is not going to be a trend. Just see the optical format of those sensors, 1/1.4 for HP3 and 1/1.3 for HP2. How can these big sensors can be used as telephoto lens, as they are very similar size to main camera sensors. Although it's implemented the thick of that telephoto module will be too much. The largest zoom camera module I've seen till this day is Oppo find x6 pro's periscope lens with optical format of 1/1.5 I think they've used IMX890 for that because of that the mobile is around 9.1mm thick. Just imagine if these sensors are used as telephoto lens what will be the thickness of handset.

How much storage is going to be needed on a phone if the camera photos are 200mp? Even downscaled by 4 it's 50mp.

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2023If quad Bayer is so good then how come no dedicated cameras... moreDedicated DSLR cameras should absolutely never come up in a conversation about smartphone cameras. Why? Its like comparing the payload of a train to that of a hatchback. You cant drive the train off tracks as with the dslr cameras that you cant put in your pockets or do anything else but take photos and videos. Do we have to pretend that smartphones could or should ever be as versatile as a camera that is 10 times the size and 5 times the cost? You can get these huge pixels in dedicated cameras but just the size of the sensor is half the phone and the lens is several times bigger, none of these are feisable in a pocketable phone.

And what about the noise because of such a small pitch size 😂?

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2023"on a 3x telephoto module with a 200MP sensor, lossles... moreYou seems to know your stuff. So as layman I have to ask. Why the diffraction would be problem when cropping on large sensor? The aperture is not changing, so the only reason to experience more of the diffraction while doing those "lossless" zooms should be because of pixel sizes are effectively smaller. Is that correct?

Most useful focal lengths for me are between 26 and 70mm while liking option to go further to get picture of distance object. So I am all in on 1x 200mp + 3x 200mp - but please somebody package it to 6,3" phone and not 6,8" behemoths!
