200MP telephoto cameras will be the hottest new trend, according to Samsung

19 September 2023
The inherent zoom capabilities of these sensors have only been used in main cameras with wide lenses for now. In the future a 3x cam could also reach out to 6x and 12x.

Samsung for life, 19 Sep 2023It is not fake pixel , it is smaller pixel . Larger pixe... moreLet's examine your comment:
"But More pixel will provide you more flexibility when compared to same sized sensor with lesser megapixel. "
- True, infact 808 pureview is a great example. But two things: 1. RGB pixels 2. Decent size of 1.4 microns. This isn't the case today. This 200mp sensor has only 0.6 micron actual physical pixel size (the 2.4 miron is a fake number, they just add 0.6 micron pixels in 4x4 array but that still isn't a real 2.4 micron pixel). And effective colour resolution is only 12.5mp. Yes, AI/software remosaicing could help colour a bit, but it will never reach ideal determined by physical laws.

"Which one you think will be better 0.75mp or 12.5mp ?"
- It depends sir. Hypothetically, what if your 12.5mp sensor has only 0.1micron pixel size? I imagine, that image would be totally unusable compared to even a sub-megapixel photo of decent pixel size, maybe even in broad daylight! Remove some light and it's even more obvious.

In conclusion, a decent balance between resolution and pixel size is needed. In my opinion, today a good smartphone camera sensor should be around 20-25megapixels with RGB pixel layout, with at least 2 micron pixel pitch. I really wish the sensor of Sharp Aquos R6, which is 1" 20.7mp RGB was more common!

Multi-Bayer sensors MUST be banned.

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2023And it's also not true due to the Tetra²pixel array, w... moreBut at least for those zoom lenses, the sensors behind are capable RGB sensors with large pixels. Unlike here, where you already got dimming problem similar to traditional zoom lens (because zooming into smaller area on sensor means less light) as well as ridiculous hexadeca Bayer senor with only 12.5mp colour resolution and only 0.6 micron or something actual pixels!

This is an evil plan for telephoto lens removal. Did you really think they'll use 200mp behind a telephoto lens? No you fool! They'll use "lossless zoom" as an excuse to remove telephoto altogether. These garbage 200mp cameras have tiny pixels and only 12.5mp worth of colour resolution.

Get ready for 10x telephoto removal in S24 ultra. They'll put a 200pm sensor behind the 3x lens and claim 12x "lossless" zoom. Of course, the shill reviewers on GSMAarena and elsewhere will claim it's better than a 10x telephoto.

Soon in future there will be no telephoto, or even ultrawide sensor. Rather just a single 1000mp or so sensor with unimaginably small pixels will be used for everything. It will be better to call it a detector instead of camera! You wonder how it's gonna perform with such tiny pixels. Don't you worry, say hello to AI! Our friend AI will use this camera/detector to "see" and get a glimpse what you're trying to photograph. Then AI will happily "paint" a picture "more perfect" than what your eyes see! Surely you don't need a sensor with good physical capability then, as long as our friend AI "sees" it's all good! We'll finally be back in the days before camera, those days of paintings. But this time not by some human artist but some AI robot!

RRHood, 19 Sep 2023there cannot be any more false information in such a short ... moreIf quad Bayer is so good then how come no dedicated cameras use it? Yes as7iii imx510 but that's the only one I heard of and other cameras beat it in photographic performance. As7iii is a video centric camera and should be no more than 12mp which is why Sony probably just modified one of the already existing 4.2 micron pixel array (from A1?) into quad Bayer so a 8.4 micron 12mp sensor can be achieved without designing an entirely new RGB one with this pixel size. This saves them cost. But there's no performance/quality benefit over an RGB 12mp 8.4 micron sensor. Rather in reality, a single physical large pixel is better than multiple smaller ones making a fake large one.
Your quad Bayer 24mp iPhone image is inferior than an RGB 24mp sensor's image.
Nokia 808 had a different approach. It was high resolution, BUT truly high, fully RGB. And each pixels were adequately sized 1.4 microns, unlike sub-micron ones especially in 200mp hexadeca Bayer sensors of today. 41mp of colour resolution from a 41mp sensor vs only 12 or 12.5mp of colour resolution out of a crazy 200mp sensor!

Anonymous, 20 Sep 2023"on a 3x telephoto module with a 200MP sensor, lossles... moreAnd it's also not true due to the Tetra²pixel array, which doesn't offer the same image quality as a 200 megapixel Bayer array (if diffraction isn't an issue).

And the zoom also wouldn't be lossless because the sensor area decreases by cropping (though this doesn't mean that the base Iso image quality is bad, if the sensor is large enough). But even a professional true zoom lens isn't lossless either, if the f-number gets worse at a high focal length.

"on a 3x telephoto module with a 200MP sensor, lossless zoom scenarios can be run from 3x to 6x to 12x."
This is actually not true due to diffraction, unless they can increase the effective lens diameter.

Anonymous, 19 Sep 2023Let's assume for a second that you're right, why ... moreAre you printing out your photos on 10 feet tall posters? No? You don't need more than 12MP. Professional photographers do.

200mp on s23u goes with detail even above mate x2 or iPhone, bit it's not perfect.
Processing miss a lot of detail, got poor hdr and colors.
Still, it's a beautiful wonder for the eyes, not to mention it offer 50mp in raw what many 50mp phones don't.
I would love to see it not just in main camera or tele, but also on superwide, we may end up with Frankenstein phone where some cameras are at 200mp and some at 10mp, really great to have a mess in photos with a different resolutions.
Start of the next year is already packed with rumors out 200mp tele cameras, so the current tele cameras start to feel old even before release, just considering pure hw.
I really wonder how they want to compete if there will be 200mp, 50mp and 12mp at similar zoom. Feels like someone will be left behind.
I really hope tho they get it together with a good hi res hdr raws, which are still rarity.
