Anonymous, 09 Oct 2023For closed back with great Soundstage nothing beats the DT770 proThose really wake up with a decent headphone amp and DAC. Also for 400 dollars, I'd just buy Sennheiser HD600's. You'd have extra money left after that, too. Those are great headphones for audio tool needs. Also it's immediately obvious what's wrong with the mix, if it doesn't sound good with HD600's!

imparanoic, 09 Oct 2023For dynamic driver Headphones, Sony have awarding winning w... moreMDR-Z1R are considered as one of the worst technically made headphones, with incredibly inconsistent frequency response.
MDR-a1m2 are subpar in their category compared to offerings by Audio Technica and many others.
WH-1000xm5 are considered as really decent because ANC headphones have really low bar when it comes to sound quality. Even Anker Q30 sounds better, but has much worse ANC and even worse microphones.
Audeze was a really good idea, because Audeze has incredibly good R&D in this category. Luckily, Sony did not even try to compete when it comes to planar headphones.
I don't care for brands when it comes to sound, I care for good sounding headphones ... and Sony was not able to release anything decent for decades. In a bubble, they might sound OKish, but when you consider competition in the same price point, they just don't stand a chance.
And no, I am not talking about TWS headphones like kiddies here would like to compare their Airpods to something, I am talking about proper headphones.

Anonymous, 09 Oct 2023Go listen to their ier-m9 and z1rIer-m9 were good in 2019, but times have changed and it's overpriced and not the leading iems nowadays, same with campfire Andromeda, for the price, even moondrop blessing 3 can beat both ier-m9 (demoed it back in 2021) and campfire Andromeda (demoed in 2018) nowadays and it's half the price of both, if you want even better (and still cheaper) moondrop variations which is under USD 500 and that's a even higher level.
Sony needs to released improved iems as it's product range is quite old for 2023 especially with Chinese iems manufacturers now

Fearghast, 09 Oct 2023Why you act like Sony ever produced good sounding headphones?
For dynamic driver Headphones, Sony have awarding winning wiredheadphones MDR-Z1R and mdr-a1m2 for audiophile market, their wireless Bluetooth headphones wh-1000xm5 is awarding winning as well, But same again, dynamic driver Headphones
It's why Sony purchased audeze to gain experience in newer technology planar magnetic headphones and in future there should be audiophile planar magnetic headphones from Sony

As expected, complete crap from Sony. When did they get so bad? Most of their new products are just mediocre, their bluetooth headphones included. The TWS buds are okay, but they're also nothing outstanding.

Lcd-gx is the best I can consider. Wish there was wireless option, but most of those like Deva are too poor at bass range. V shape is good, but you got to see the high peaks, if there are or not. Seeing FR is the best way.

Bassy sound is godsend. Unless you love sharp sibilant treble. But even bassy headphones can sound sharp. Like my Skullcandy Crusher Evo. If you like bass nothing can beat them.

If you want an excellent pair of open-backs for cheap, I would highly recommend the Philips SPH9500 instead. You can find them nowadays for $60-70 on Aliexpress.
I recently bought them and honestly I don't think you should spend $400 when you can get the SPH9500 that are just as capable for mastering spatial audio. Its instrument separation and imaging capabilities are hands down one of the best I've heard.
And for general music listening it's great too, very neutral tuning but not at all flat/boring sounding.
