Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max vs. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

10 October 2023
We compare the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Sort by:

IDK why you say 'Now cheaper' while Galaxy S23 Ultra's official price is still same... it is STILL and EVERYWHERE same price as when it was launched, except during some seasonal deals offered by seller companies...!
So officially it is STILL not cheaper, which is sad :(

I see those Youtuber more side to Samsung. Also I ignore Youtuber more into drama just to gain attention.

              Tensynos 3 vs Snapdragon 8g2

              GFX3.1 1080p offscreen
              - tensynos 3: 155fps, efficiency 22.5 fps/watt
              - 8g2: 223fps, efficiency 30.4 fps/watt

              Aztec Vulkan Metal 1440p offscreen
              - tensynos 3: 37fps, efficiency 7.9
              - 8g2: 69fps, efficiency 9.1

              Wildlife Extreme
              - tensynos 3: 2245 , efficiency 424.8
              - 8g2: 3729, efficiency 494.8

Sa sung should be ashamed of making this crap. It has less raw power than 8g1, A14 and D9000.

Nick Tegrataker, 11 Oct 2023S23U seems to have a very slight edge in detail recovery in... moreI can keep going, because the difference is massive. If you understand basic photography. There is no "detail recovery" on the Samsung, there is only detail LOSS of the iphone camera.

Look at the cable on the ground near the stop lights on the right. It looks completely unnatural on the iPhone, due to bad processing in an attempt to fix a bad image. Not so on the Samsung. Look at the shadow from the post, going across the pavement in the middle. It is genuinely hard to tell if it is a shadow or if it's a deformation in the pavement on that iPhone photo. It looks all natural on the Samsung. Why? Because the Samsung sensor captures all the detail, while your iPhone is trying to fix all that noise you can find all across their images.

It isn't a match, it's pro vs amateur league. Too bad there are people listening to the noise spammed everywhere by shady corporations like Apple and Google. Too bad they get fooled into buying garbage like this, thinking it's "flagship".

Anonymous, 11 Oct 2023So iPhone is 1 generation behind the flagships from Samsung... moreExactly, we are comparing different generations of phones here. Still interesting to see just how good the S23 Ultra is, despite being nearly a year old. Shame about the prices.

Anonymous, 11 Oct 2023I'd say the same quality differences are noticeable on... moreS23U seems to have a very slight edge in detail recovery in deepest shadows but that's where its advantage seems to end.

There's nothing "natural" about S23U's daylight 1x photo - details and textures are sharpened so heavily to the point that you can spot sharpening and ringing artifacts (which untrained eyes often mistake as "bright reflections") everywhere. Also, no, lamps and power lines on iPhone's shot are just as visible as those on S23U's shot, sharpening makes them stand out more on S23U's but look much less natural at the same time. This is not how I want my phone camera to automatically process the photo nor how I would edit RAW that I have taken with my dedicated camera myself.

What's funny is that Samsung's processing used to be more dialled in 3 years ago when they released the Note 20 series. Since then it's been getting a lot more aggressive, and what I'm seeing in this comparison is purely disgusting. Actually, iPhone's processing at 1x was quite atrocious in the 14 series but they did tone it down significantly this year and the new 24MP output is better than ever. Maybe Samsung could learn a thing or two from Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo and Sony regarding how to process photos taken in well-lit scenes.

Nick Tegrataker, 11 Oct 2023I don't understand why you and some people are still h... moreI dont understand why you and some other here believe all brands say.

In case you do not remember, performance restriction can easily be bypassed during benchmarks. Something chinese brands know extremely well.
                        Something samsung did last year.

Even if performance is reduced, 15 pro is still gonna do tasks as fast as 14 pro or still slightly ahead. Only fools believe it was iOS issue when 15/15+ have zero problems. Apple has many different devices running ios17, overheat is just the new pros.

D9300 is gonna be capped as well. Just wait.

Many chinese phones with 8+g1 announced this year have the clock of 8g1 instead.
People have zero idea of this. Because while using the phone they do not notice difference.

Now, can we know why so many chinese phones restrict performance during heavy tasks but go full power when detect antutu?

So, if I run antutu, it goes full power no matter the heat.
If user tries to record 4K@60, it gives me 4K@45/40 after few minutes (and ruins the video) when it should keep 4K@60 as long as user needs.
                        So cool of them.

No surprise some brands still show antutu score when they announce the phones. Nothing more pathetic to be done during the presentation.

Nick Tegrataker, 11 Oct 2023Yeah, iPhone's 10x zoomed shots look extremely bad ful... moreI'd say the same quality differences are noticeable on 1x vs 1x. Look at the foreground on the 1x images of that same shot. The detail is almost gone on the lamp and power line posts on the iPhone. They look very natural on the S23U shots. It is hard for a rushed eye to see quality differences in chaotic trees, but look for dynamic range. How they each preserve dark patches as well as bright leaf reflections. I'd say the iPhone camera looks more akin to something you'd get form a 2-3 years old Samsung flagship. Dull and washed out with a lot of noise.

Just a general remark which applies to many articles: iPhone's 4441 mAh is the rated battery capacity. The rated battery capacity of S23 Ultra is 4855 mAh. The 5000 mAh are misleading when comparing the battery capacity.

Anonymous, 10 Oct 2023"Finally, the 10X zoomed photo from the iPhone is real... moreYeah, iPhone's 10x zoomed shots look extremely bad full of splotchy noises. Apple is clearly employing some sort of AI upscaling as I see weirdly defined patterns and lines that are commonly seen in photos upscaled using the likes of Topaz, Gigapixel etc. everywhere across the frame.

On a more positive note, the 1x shots from the iPhone seem a lot nicer and S23 Ultra's oversharpened mess absolutely gets trashed, so it's good to know that Apple has toned down the processing considerably in this regard.
