Anonymous, 27 Oct 2023What? For mobile users, this could be huge if implemented ... moreI think you are right on this front. The majority of laptop users don't really use them for heavy tasks like gaming or video editing, but simple tasks like web browsing, watching videos, creating documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Meaning they would be perfectly fine with a huge tablet (like the Tab S9 Ultra) and a keyboard. Or a Chromebook.

We are probably going to see a split in mainstream laptops from now on. Gaming and content-creation laptops will still be bulky and have space for cooling etc but the majority of laptops will be low-powered, highly efficient machines running mobile platforms.

Which seems like a win for everyone.

Worse yet, Apple had hardware accelerators for their Rosetta translation of x86 apps. Pretty certain Qualcomm will have no such thing and will do it all in software.

Getting Macbook like battery life on Windows is a huge win and is great for productivity users. These are mobile chips. Want power for gaming? Get a desktop, with proper cooling and upgradeable parts.

Haven’t Microsoft and Qualcomm been trying this with Windows on Arm since 2017 with normal Snapdragons and 2018 with the 8cx?

One JUICY bit of news ....

                https://www.windowscentral.com/hardware/nvidia-and-amd-reportedly-gearing-up-to-offer-arm-cpus-for-windows-pcs

"According to Reuters sources, both NVIDIA and AMD have begun the process of readying ARM-based CPUs to power Windows PCs, and could be set to launch in 2025. This would make sense given the reported expiration of Microsoft's exclusivity arrangement with Qualcomm ending in 2024. "

Linux users, this means a LOT more powerful and cheaper laptops down the road. TB4/USB 4 is done via 2x USB-C 3.2 but we'll miss out on TB5!

                  Micro Men (720P)
Affectionately comic drama about the British home computer boom of the early 1980s.

Legendary inventor Clive Sinclair battles it out with ex-employee Chris Curry, founder of Acorn Computers, for dominance in the fledgling market.

The rivalry comes to a head when the BBC announce their Computer Literacy Project, with the stated aim of putting a micro in every school in Britain. When Acorn wins the contract, Sinclair is furious, and determines to outsell the BBC Micro with his ZX Spectrum computer.

For those who know, Acorn Computers is the beginning of ARM cpu!
                  https://community.arm.com/arm-community-blogs/b/architectures-and-processors-blog/posts/a-brief-history-of-arm-part-1

"The company was founded in November 1990 as Advanced RISC Machines Ltd and structured as a joint venture between Acorn Computers, Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.) and VLSI Technology. The reason for this was because Apple wanted to use Arm technology but didn’t want to base a product on Acorn IP – who, at the time were considered a competitor. Apple invested the cash, VLSI Technology provided the tools, and Acorn provided the 12 engineers and with that Arm was born, and its luxury office in Cambridge – A barn!"

"This led to Arm creating a custom 16 bit per instruction set that lowered the memory demands, and this was the design that was licensed by TI and sold to Nokia. The first Arm powered GSM phone was the Nokia6110 and this was a massive success. The Arm7 became the flagship mobile design for Arm and has since been used by over 165 licensees and has produced over 10 Billion chips since 1994."

On April 17th, 1998, Arm Holdings PLC completed a joint listing on the London Stock Exchange and NASDAQ with an IPO at £5.75. The reason for the joint listing was twofold. First, NASDAQ was the market through which Arm believed it would gain the sort of valuation it deserved in the tech bubble of the time which was mainly based out of the states. Second, the two major shareholders of Arm were American and English, and Arm wished to allow existing Acorn shareholders in the UK to have continued involvement. Arm going public caused the stock to soar and turned the small British semiconductor design company into a Billion Dollar company in a matter of months!

ARM Holdings was publicly listed in early 1999

Well, if laptop makers are thinking they can sell a 1000$ ARM laptop with Windows, they are in for a surprise.

At that price point, you are better off with a Macbook tbh, because everything will probably be soldered, and they will upsell you the upgrades as expensive as possiblr
