its official

"Google today announced that it will start directly selling a special version of Samsung's Galaxy S 4 flagship phone that is unlocked and ships with stock Android 4.2, essentially expanding the Nexus family of "pure Google" devices. The device sports LTE compatible with both AT&T and T-Mobile's networks. It is bootloader-unlocked and will receive Android updates before most other phones, like Nexus devices. It ships June 26th for $649."

I suspect if they do want to go down this road what we will end up with is a very cut down version of Touchwiz, only the parts necessary for the Samsung sepcific featues, plus the relevant parts of the underlying framework. I would love a stock Android interface as Touchwiz just does not compare to Launchers such as Go Ex, Apex or Nova, for example, and with much of the unnecessary parts gone the phone would probably have better battery life.

Anonymous, 15 May 2013For the people that have never run a custom ROM like CM, th... moreI used SGS I, II, Note I with all these custom ROMs which was good up to a point but will you get support from those custom ROMs? I really doubt. For example, Polaris may stop working if I put some Custom ROM, though you might say you can find alternate but how many environments you can manage?

Stock Android AOSP is good start but what is the use of having all the sensors and other hardware not being exploited properly?

If you want smooth performance without lag (if thats what is preventing) then you must try some other options which are much more cheaper than going for S4 type.

I've used CM, touchwiz, sense UI, and various launchers and I prefer standard android over all of them.

For the people that have never run a custom ROM like CM, they have no idea how fast and smooth the device becomes, it is night and day from stock TW even with Nova Launcher, Nova Launcher does not take away all the bloatware from Verizon and Samsung which in turn lags the device, once you run a good ROM, you will never go back to stock TW, trust me, no matter what extra features you get with stock, which in my book more that 75% of them are useless.

I don't see the point. All that extra software features are what makes Samsung phones interesting to some people. Otherwise they are just good internal hardware with controversial design and plastic feel. If you want stock android, you are better off with cheaper Nexus or brand like Huawei, that doesn't put so much resources in software development to keep prices down.

Hope samsung uses original AOSP android on S4, or accept to open their own sources to google. As Android is open source, and hope any impromvements are shared with google. This is the main idea of android, to be community software. Thats how it is number1 in the world.
