Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra vs. Google Pixel 8 Pro

02 November 2023
The best Pixel for 2023 against the soon-to-be-replaced top-tier Galaxy.

Sort by:

Pixel is NOT a rugged phone, it's very very delicate phone. That is the reason why users should think thousand times before getting one.

Service center in India is lousy. As it is outsourced, neither Google nor F1InfoServices (their service partner) cares to resolve any issues.

Yes the S23 ultra can record but not S23 pro!!

Would buy neither. Paifully slow charging, no charger in box, inneficient bad CPU in Google and both have bad endurance rating in case of Samsung thanks to useless bloatware inside called one UI.

Is anyone buy pixel for OS updates or is it too long term ambitious regarding Google's policies.

The Pixel's 1x daylight photos are impressive. Much more detailed than the Galaxy's.

Anonymous, 04 Nov 2023U think,u don't know. Stop lying ur 7 pro outperformed... moreI don't lie and you should stop accusing someone without any arguments just because you didn't like what you read. I tested it multiple times in a store. It definitely outperformed the S23 Ultra at 360mm in Night Sight mode. And yes, even in this gsmarena-comparison, the 8 Pro clearly outperforms the S23 Ultra at 10x. (The S23 Ultra just oversharpens at 10x here, the S23 Ultra is only better regarding chromatic aberration)

And as I explained, that's what you would expect (if one ignores the different color filter arrays). The S23 Ultra's periscope offers fewer megapixels per angle than a Pixel 7 Pro or a Pixel 8 Pro and it has no advantage regarding diffraction. It actually has a disadvantage regarding diffraction in comparison with the 8 Pro because the effective lens diameter of the S23 Ultra is 5.55mm whereas the 8 Pro has 6.43mm.
Nonetheless, all periscope cameras still suffer from diffraction and this works like an anti-aliasing filter and makes the type of the color filter array nearly irrelevant here.
Diffraction is one of the main reasons why telescopes need to be so large. The larger the effective diameter, the more detail you can theoretically get from distant objects. That's also the reason why a ("20x") 480mm smartphone camera with the same quality is physically impossible, if one doesn't use larger lenses.

By the way, I also compared Pixel 8 Pro and 7 Pro raw files at 360mm + Night Sight and the level of detail was nearly identical.

I also compared my Pixel 7 Pro with a Sigma 105mm lens and chose an f-number that gave me about the same effective lens diameter and indeed, the level of detail was about the same, when used on a Canon M50 (also about the same number of megapixels per angle). This indicates that my 7 Pro, which has about the same effective lens diameter as the S23 Ultra's periscope, captures approximately the limit of what is physically possible with this effective lens diameter.

                          And the comparison saga begins...
