its depend of the needs

i still buy a new phone every year, but my 5 years old phone still work just perfect as it is (poco f1/2018), yeah its can't run such heavy game like genshin smoothly

average age of current phone: 2,72 years
average age of previous phone: 3,13 years
expected time to upgrade phone: 3,47 years
(5+ years counted as 5y so real average probably higher)
even on an enthusiast site the average upgrade cycle is 3-3,5 years so imagine the global average..

The same people who complain about a phone not having long enough software support are the same people who change their phones every 2-3 years .. Logic

Question was wrong. There was no option 0 to 1 year. So I vote 1 year, too.

I doubt the people here, looking at the top 10 trending phones, every flagship is always ranked number 1 when it comes out. For example Xiaomi 14, every mid range Galaxy, Redmi Note is always trending here. These phones nowdays are designed to last 4 years.

It's nice to add a question "Why you have retired your previous phone?". Because I'd happily use my old phone for more, but it was broken by update, and repair price was insufficiently big. I did not plan to upgrade this year.

I was planing to keep my phone for 5+
It had minor technical issues for which I was surprisingly offered a free upgrade. So now I have a new phone, kept my old for less than a year but that was not my plan in the first place...

A big part of this is that phones have simply become "good enough"

Most people really just use their phones for Facebook/web browsing/GPS navigation/music/photos. None of those are very demanding, even mid-range phones these days are more than enough.

Photos are the one place where a typical user will notice a difference. But after the last few years with the camera wars, we've also started hitting the limits. Samsung, Apple, and Google barely upgraded their cameras, Xiaomi actually downgraded their sensor on the 14 pro.

Average users have no real reason to upgrade any time soon.

Even gamers are kind of stuck in a grey area between "way more powerful than an average mobile user" and "way too weak to compete with consoles and PCs". Might as well wait a few extra years until mobile gaming is actually powerful enough to play a "real" console game, or all you're doing is getting a few more fps in Genshin Impact...

Anonymous, 05 Nov 2023Phones are getting more expensive.Or they're getting better when it comes to longevity. But of course, that's bad for capitalism hehehe. So please keep buying the new one that will be used like the phone you had 5 years ago.

they would plan on keeping phones for longer if they have decent specs and does not lag over time. low end phones are flooding the market. built to be thrown away in shorter period.
